Disney has a NEW island destination!
Recently, Disney Cruise Line opened Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, which is a new destination for several cruise itineraries. The Bahamian island is home to beautiful beaches, several restaurants, and plenty of activities for the family during your day-long visit. And we got to visit to check it out! But we got a LOT of questions about Lookout Cay, and now we’re here to answer them.
How Long Is the Walk From the Ship?
When your Disney cruise ship docks at the island, you’ll have to walk from the boat to the island itself, taking a pretty long pier to get there. It’s a significantly longer dock than the one at Disney’s other island destination, Castaway Cay, so many are concerned about the walk.
All in all, the walk takes about 10 minutes to get from the boat to the end of the dock. However, there was limited shade during that walk, and during our visit, there were no benches for cruisers to take breaks. Golf carts are available for those who need mobility assistance, but they are limited. Most people will need to walk.
Do You Have to Take a Tram?
On Castaway Cay, a tram takes visitors to the various parts of the island, since they’re all a pretty significant walking distance from each other. Does Lookout Cay offer the same service?
Yes! Unless you booked a cabana on the very front part of the island nearest to the ship, you’ll be able to take a tram to get to your destination.
Is There a Bar?
For those hoping to enjoy a fruity drink on the beach, you may be wondering about the bar scene. Don’t worry; there are several available on Lookout Cay! However, the bars all kind of generally look the same and have the same menu.
The good news about that is that you won’t have to worry about going to a specific bar for a signature beverage, but the bad news is that hopping around and checking them all out may not be quite as exciting.
What’s the Food Like?
There are a couple different places to eat on the island, but they all serve similar menus. You can get things like beef, wings, pork, mac and cheese, fruit, hot dogs, burgers — pretty much your basic American fare. All the restaurants are quick-service buffets, so you’ll make your own plate and then seat yourself. The food wasn’t bad; it’s mostly designed to be crowd-pleasing eats.
One problem we noticed during our visit to Lookout Cay is that there were a LOT of flies out and about, which made the buffet service difficult. Hopefully, this is a problem that Disney will solve in the near future, because it definitely affected the experience negatively.
Another problem you may have is that seating can be limited, and food is only available during a certain window of time, so you can’t exactly wait for the lunch rush to pass. We had to circle the seating area at Serenity Bay for about ten minutes to find a place to sit down.
Are There Characters?
Like Castaway Cay, you CAN find characters at Lookout Cay! However, they could be tricky to spot. We found Goofy and Pluto near True True BBQ during our visit.
You may also get to see some Disney characters if you check out the entertainment offerings on the island. We would definitely recommend those for families with children who want to see their favorite Disney pals!
Is It Easy to Get Around?
One problem we ran into is that there aren’t a ton of maps and signs around the island, so it can be a challenge to navigate from place to place. We recommend taking a photo of the island map and having it on your phone so that you can access it easily.
Ultimately, we had a fun time at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, and we’re excited for Disney to have another island option on its cruise itineraries. Lots of changes are coming to Disney Cruise Line in the future, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!
