Disney and Marvel Studios have released the first teaser trailer and poster for “Captain America: Brave New World.”
‘Captain America: Brave New World’
“Captain America: Brave New World” will be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourth “Captain America” film, but the first starring Anthony Mackie as Captain America after Chris Evans retired from the franchise.
Mackie portrays Sam Wilson, who was previously known as the Falcon. At the end of “Avengers: Endgame,” Evans’ Steve Rogers stepped down as Captain America and handed his shield off to Sam. The Disney+ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” saw Sam struggling to accept the role of Captain America but he officially took up the mantle in the show’s finale.
Disney released this description of “Captain America: Brave New World”:
After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.
Watch the teaser trailer below.
Ford takes over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross from William Hurt, who passed away in 2022. The teaser acknowledges the casting update when Ross says he shaved his mustache. In the comics, Ross becomes Red Hulk, who appears at the end of the teaser and is holding Captain America’s shield in the poster.
“Captain America: Brave New World” also stars Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, who debuted in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Now that Sam is Captain America, Joaquin has taken up the Falcon mantle. Carl Lumbly returns as Isaiah Bradley, also from the Disney+ series. Tim Blake Nelson and Liv Tyler reprise their roles as Samuel Sterns a.k.a. The Leader and Betty Ross, respectively. They previously appeared in the oft-forgotten “The Incredible Hulk” (2008).
Shira Haas joins the MCU as Sabra. Xosha Roquemore, Rosa Salazar, and Giancarlo Esposito also star. Esposito joined the film during reshoots. The film is directed by Julius Onah. It’s produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore and executive produced by Louis D’Esposito and Charles Newirth. “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” showrunner Malcolm Spellman wrote the screenplay with Dalan Musson and Matthew Orton.
The film originally had the subtitle “New World Order,” which was also the name of the first “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” episode. The title was considered controversial due to its connection to antisemitic conspiracy theories and was later changed.
Marvel has also faced criticism for including the Israeli superhero Ruth Bat-Seraph a.k.a. Sabra, especially amid increasing Israel-Palestine violence. Marvel told CNN in 2022 that they “are taking a new approach with the character Sabra who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago” and that Marvel characters “are always freshly imagined for the screen and today’s audience.”
“Captain America: Brave New World” will hit U.S. theaters on February 14, 2025.
