Many flights have been delayed, international Disney and Universal parks are having issues, and other technology problems abound due to a global IT outage stemming from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
Global Outage Affects Travel
CrowdStrike said the issue was not caused by a security incident or cyberattack but a “faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows” and they are working on a fix.
The Orlando International Airport posted on social media that flight delays and cancellations may occur and guests should contact their airline directly for specific flight information. Similar issues have been reported from other airports. As of 8:15 a.m. ET, more than 300 flights were delayed and 100 flights were canceled on Friday at New York City area airports.
According to the Associated Press, the outage has also affected banks and media outlets. Some states have reported disruptions with 911 calls.
Universal Studios Japan said that ticket sales will not be available in person this weekend and guests should purchase tickets online instead.
Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris hotels have been having issues. DLP Report shared that Disneyland Paris turnstiles were not working on Friday morning and Cast Members were processing entry manually. Within a few hours, turnstiles were back online.
DLP Report also posted images of screen signs throughout the park stuck in “recovery” mode. These include wait time displays, although the actual attractions were not affected.
Most stateside Universal and Disney operations are currently running fine. My Disney Experience, the Disneyland app, and both Universal apps are working as expected.
We have noticed several attractions go down at Walt Disney World on Thursday and Friday, particularly in Frontierland and Adventureland at Magic Kingdom. Country Bear Musical Jamboree officially premiered this week but with some reported issues that could be due to the outage. This is not confirmed, however.
