The trailer for the Disney+ original series ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ has been released, and it appears that a character familiar to Disney Parks fans is going to be in the show.
Fuzzball from ‘Captain EO’ Joins the ‘Skeleton Crew’
A character who resembles Fuzzball, the flying cat-like sidekick in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1986 musical science-fiction film “Captain EO,” appears briefly in the trailer for the upcoming series.
While it is not confirmed, the character that appears in trailer looks nearly identical to the one seen in “Captain EO,” albeit as a digital recreation and not a physical puppet.
It would be a fitting tribute to include Fuzzball in the series, as George Lucas, creator of “Star Wars,” was executive producer of “Captain EO.”
“Captain EO” debuted at EPCOT in 1986. Disneyland Park, Disneyland Paris, and Tokyo Disneyland would later receive the show as well. The attraction was seen as a technological marvel at the time and is considered one of the first “4D’ films, as it synchronized in-theater effects to the action happening on screen.
D23 describes the film with the following synopsis:
Captain EO and his crew of mythical space creatures — Hooter, Fuzzball, the Geex, Major Domo, Minor Domo — discover a colorless planet where they are confronted by the Supreme Leader and her forces of darkness. Using the power of music, dance, and light, EO and his crew are able to turn the black-and-white land into a magical world of color and happiness.
“Captain EO” delighted guests in EPCOT until it closed in 1994, only to be brought back in 2010 as a tribute to the film’s star and pop icon, Michael Jackson, who passed away the year prior. The show closed permanently on December 6, 2015 at Walt Disney World.
The trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premiered last night during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event. The series has been described as an Amblin-like coming-of-age adventure set in the New Republic era. It will debut on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on December 3, 2024.
