New ‘Musical World of Coco’ Show Debuts at Disney California Adventure

The newly updated Plaza de la Familia “Coco” show, now titled “The Storytellers of Plaza de la Familia Celebrate the Musical World of Coco,” has made its debut at Disney California Adventure.

The Storytellers of Plaza de la Familia Celebrate the Musical World of Coco

The new show features music from the Academy Award-winning animated movie, including “The World Es Mi Familia,” “Remember Me,” and the Mexican folk song “La Llorona.”

Performers in colorful traditional attire entertain visitors at a theme park, standing near a decorated archway and festive backdrops on a sunny day.

It begins with the cast emerging from the Pixar Pier parade gate, rather than walking out of the Plaza de la Familia arch like in the previous iteration of the show.

As a result, the viewing area of the show has also been reduced, since the cast has to get out of the parade gate and over to La Plaza de la Familia. That area does become available for viewing once the performers have passed by, but guests are not allowed to wait for the show to begin there.

Group of performers in colorful outfits sing and dance in front of a Día de los Muertos themed arch that says "COCO" at an outdoor event with onlookers in the background.

Set pieces for the show include a small wagon and platform, newly added for this version.

Papel picado decorations connect the two, and the wagon eventually opens up to reveal an ofrenda for Mama Coco.

A group of dancers in colorful traditional attire performs outdoors near a decorated archway and a cart, reminiscent of the lively festivities at the Dead Coconut Club, with bystanders watching.

There are also significant choreography and costume changes.

Two women in colorful traditional attire are performing a dance. One woman is handling brooms with shoes attached. Bystanders observe the performance in the background.

There is also a new audience participation section involving shoes on poles, which was not present in the show’s original version.

Unfortunately, the mariachi band (known externally as the Mariachi Divas) was cut entirely from the production. However, a female vocalist was added alongside the previous male vocalist.

A group of performers in colorful attire are entertaining a crowd at a themed outdoor event with vibrant decorations and banners. A man and child are posing in the foreground, with the child holding a guitar.

The hand-animated Miguel puppet also returns toward the end of the show.

The skeleton puppets are back as well, but in new costumes.

A person holds up a colorful creature on a stick in front of a statue of a skeleton playing a guitar at the Dead Coconut Club, with a tree and a building partially decorated with flowers in the background.

A new stick puppet of Dante in his alebrije form was also added.

A lively outdoor parade features performers in colorful traditional costumes, singing and dancing. Under the decorated archway and festive decorations, you can spot a banner for the Dead Coconut Club, with a captivated crowd watching the vibrant spectacle unfold.

Outside of those changes, the show is more or less the same as “A Musical Celebration of Coco,” which has been running since 2017. The updates to the show were announced earlier this summer.

You can watch our video of the previous version of the show below:

The “Musical World of Coco” show is now performing several times daily at Paradise Gardens in Disney California Adventure. Between performances, guests can also meet and take photos with the hand-animated puppet of Miguel.
