Dead Coconut Club at CityWalk Orlando Featuring Blumhouse and Vamp Scare Zone Props

Vampires have taken over the Red Coconut Club at Universal CityWalk Orlando, turning it into the Dead Coconut Club for another Halloween Horror Nights season. This year’s Halloween club overlay takes inspiration (and actual props) from the Vamp scare zones of HHN past as well as Blumhouse.

Major Sweets Candy Factory Embraces the Silly and Grotesque at Halloween Horror Nights 33

Major Sweets Candy Factory is Willy Wonka’s nightmare (or maybe his life goal; he is a little creepy) and one of the original houses for Halloween Horror Nights 33 at Universal Studios Florida.

House

Promotional image for Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights showcasing Major Sweets Candy Factory, an event running on select nights from August 30 to November 3.

You’re chaperoning a fieldtrip to a candy factory when the free samples transform the kids into candy-coated killers.

Backstory

Major Sweets prowling through the Sweet Revenge scare zone at Halloween Horror Nights 31.

Major Sweets Candy Factory is based on the Sweet Revenge scare zone from HHN 31. The house serves as a prequel, before the ill-fated Halloween parade where Major Sweets’ donated candy turns the kids into killers. Instead, we chaperone a field trip to the factory where Major Sweets is testing his formula on unsuspecting school children.

Miss Treats, Major Sweets’ wife, appeared in the zone and returns for the house. A new character, Taffy, who has been disfigured by a workplace accident at the factory but remains loyal to Major Sweets.

Miss Treats, wife of Major Sweets, in the Sweet Revenge scare zone at Halloween Horror Nights 31.

We arrive to chaperone and are welcomed in by Major Sweets and Miss Treats. Everything seems fine (if not a little unsettling) on the surface, but things quickly take a sour turn after we enter the factory. Once everything starts to go wrong — or according to plan, if you’re Major Sweets — the children begin their rampage and the company decides it must destroy all evidence.

It’s us. We’re the evidence.

Review of Major Sweets Candy Factory

A neon-lit building exterior with colorful lights illuminates its bricks, glass blocks, and metal structures at night, resembling the vibrant façade of a major sweets candy factory.

Major Sweets is a spiritual successor to Killer Klowns. It’s bright, fun, and grotesque. The Scareactors are killing it (pun intended). They’re clearly having fun and playing up their roles. It’s over-the-top but appropriately so. There’s a little ditty as you’re being shepherded toward the compactor that plays into the cognitive dissonance.

The special effects are noteworthy here. There’s a very disorienting hallway, props that move, and sounds and lighting meant to further the feeling of being in a functional, dangerous factory. It’s so good.

Hands down, it’s the best house they’ve ever done in this location. It’s a totally new layout, and it works.

Miss Treats is serving in every scene she’s in, and Taffy is creepy. There are GATs (guest activated triggers — big red buttons); push them! They cause some bonus effects.

Overall, this house embodies the energy of the scare zone and brings a lot of fun to the table. It creates an unsettling, disturbing environment without relying heavily on jumpscares. This house, like Goblin’s Feast, represents what the Halloween Horror Nights does best. They’re two very different experiences that showcase what makes this event stand out each year.

The house is based on one of the same name from 2023’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. It features the same legends. The three monsters are inspired by Latin American myths but are not meant to be fully authentic representations.

La Lechuza, the Owl Witch, has origins in Mexican and Texan folklore as a shapeshifter who usually took the form of an owl. The version of the story used for the house is that the villagers put her to death as a result of witch trials, and she comes back as an owl. She lures victims by imitating the sound of a crying baby.

Tlahuelpuchi hails from the Tlaxcala region of Mexico. The myth that the team used says that anyone can be a Tlahuelpuchi if they conduct a ceremony around puberty in order to transform into an animal (usually a turkey vulture) and drink blood from their victim’s flesh.

The story used for the third “monster,” El Silbón (from the Los Llanos region of Colombia and Venezuela), is below.

A boy living on a farm falls in love with a woman who his father doesn’t approve of. The father comes in and sees her and murders her. The boy then murders his father. His grandfather comes home and sees what happened. He whips the boy until the flesh falls off his back and pours alcohol on his wounds before setting dogs upon him to rip him to shreds. As the boy crawls into the woods, he gives him a bag of his father’s bones and condemns the boy to carry the bones of his father on his back.

The boy becomes El Silbón, a 12 foot tall creature with a distinctive whistle. The legend says if you hear the whistle and it sounds far away, he’s actually very close, and vice versa. He preys primarily on womanizers and drunkards. When guests enter El Silbón’s village, they will witness the scene of a pulqueria massacre. He has killed every single person inside.

El Silbón has particular methods of murder. If the victim is a drunk, he sucks the alcohol out of their body through the navel. With womanizers, he rips them limb by limb, removes the bones from their bodies, and adds them to his sack.

Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America is another visually beautiful house supplemented with puppets. This one had weaker Scareactors — not the actors themselves, but their variety. There were plenty of the three monsters, but we feel more villagers were needed to ground the story.

As you saw at the top of this article, we warned of instances of child death. In this haunted house, multiple babies are graphically eaten and can be heard crying. This could potentially be very upsetting for some, so keep that in mind should you decide to walk through this house during your time at the event.

El Silbon was only 12 feet tall once in the house. The most effective monster, in our opinion, was the enormous La Lechuza. She is terrifying, unsettling, and really, really cool. There was also a puppet La Lechuza head who came at us without relenting. The tall Muerte outside of the exit for the house was also neat.

There are a couple of really good scares here, but we wouldn’t call it our top house of the event. We still hope we get the sequel house that’s present at Universal Studios Hollywood this year, purely so we can face El Cucuy.

Insidious: The Further Brings Some of the Best Scares to Halloween Horror Nights 33

Insidious: The Further is one of ten houses at Halloween Horror Nights 33, and we step into the realm of spirits and demons to see if we can survive.

House

Don’t get trapped in The Further as terrifying demons try to ensnare you. Enter the Red-Faced Demon’s lair behind The Red Door. And try to keep away from KeyFace, so he can’t lock up your spirit.

Backstory

A red door with claw marks, inscribed with "Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights" and "Insidious The Further," evokes the eerie atmosphere of a haunted house.

Insidious: The Further is based on the “Insidious” film franchise. The Further is a purgatory-esque realm full of the souls of the dead. Guests enter through The Red Door into The Further, the realm of the Red-faced Demon, who was the main entity other than the Bride in Black for most of the franchise. KeyFace is the demon who tormented the psychic/paranormal investigator Elise Rainier in her youth, as depicted in 2018’s “Insidious: The Last Key.” Elise is not the main character of the franchise, but she is the character who returns in each film, a thread tying all the demonic encounters together.

Review of Insidious: The Further

A sign at the entrance to the attraction indicates a 5-minute wait and displays various safety warnings. Two staff members stand nearby, bathed in the eerie atmosphere of Halloween Horror Nights 33, while the theme park's background adds to the anticipation.

We’ll be upfront about this: Insidious: The Further is good. Really good.

This haunted house is jam-packed with so many good scares. Our group got scared quite a few times when going through this house, and we had a ball watching it happen.

There is a particularly good moment that we won’t spoil involving the Bride in Black. It’s creative and effective and we think you’ll appreciate it.

The back half of the house gets a little repetitive for our tastes with specific character scares, but it makes up for it with how the house plays into the realm of The Further. All the weird, forced perspective set pieces and void spaces filled with random static figures work well in this setting. Insidious: The Further does a good job of overwhelming you, so when something finally does jump out at you, it really gets you.

We also appreciated the giant red door at the entrance to the house and thought the masks and other costume design aspects were good.

Our group was divided on the rating between a 6 and a 5, but we’ll go with a 5 here, as it was better than expected but still not mind-blowing.
