Theme Park Math: How Should Disney Decide What Experiences to Replace?

Much discussion has occurred amongst Disney fandom about the possible replacement of Jim Henson’s Muppet*Vision 3D with the recently announced Monstropolis themed land. I do not know where Walt Disney Imagineering plans on putting the new land, but it did get me thinking about which attractions are “untouchable.” While my dogma would state that nothing is untouchable […]

PHOTO REPORT: Disney’s Hollywood Studios 8/19/2024 (Checking on the AT-AT, Store Updates, & More)

Good afternoon and happy Tuesday! This is your one and only Nana. Somehow, I ended up writing a LONG photo report. I’m so happy that I can add a bit of pixie dust to your daily life (or maybe not…).

A Day in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Today, I visited Hollywood Studios. You know, I’m a Disney-MGM Studios girl… but we can’t bring back the old days, so we move forward.

A hand holds a limited release Mickey Mouse watch with colorful artwork, displayed in a black box. In the background, boxed Disney-themed Halloween merchandise is visible.

On the way into the park, I found the 2024 Halloween MagicBand+ at Mickey’s of Hollywood. We were searching for this last week, and now it’s here.

Bright orange Halloween-themed t-shirts with a haunted house design are showcased on a display rack in a Hollywood Studio store. Shelves in the background contain various other merchandise, all perfectly poised for an upcoming PHOTO REPORT dated 8/19/2024.

There’s also been a little change in Keystone Clothiers, as the shop now carries some select T-shirts. But don’t worry! The store still has plenty of Star Wars items.

A person shops for t-shirts in a theme park store at Hollywood Studio. The area, labeled "Tees," features various t-shirts, hats, and merchandise displays. PHOTO REPORT: 8/19/2024.

Two giant boxes were once covering the divider walls, but now the boxes are gone, and you can see the freshly painted wall.

People walking and standing near a building with palm trees and outdoor seating on a sunny day at Hollywood Studio. This could be perfect for our photo report dated 8/19/2024.

While I’m writing this photo report, let me share my favorite Star Wars characters. I love Jabba the Hutt and the AT-AT (yes, I do have both popcorn buckets). However, my favorite AT-AT by Star Tours — The Adventures Continue hasn’t been doing well recently.

People walking near a large AT-AT walker replica among trees at Hollywood Studio, with a sign indicating directions to "Star Tours" and "Lightning Lane." PHOTO REPORT, 8/19/2024.

The massive AT-AT is currently not moving or making any noises. I’m worried about my baby. I keep telling AT-AT, “This is not a great time to be sick…” (Oh and don’t forget, they still haven’t fixed the cannons in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance…)

A group of people, including individuals with strollers and a service dog, gather in front of a large green gate at an outdoor Hollywood Studio on a sunny day.

Moving on… Donald and Daisy Duck have been moved back by the gate in Grand Avenue for their meet and greet, and they are so popular! The line to say hi was quite long when I passed by.

Interior of a Hollywood Studio-themed store with various props and decorations on the walls, hanging lantern-style lights, and a counter with two people browsing items. A person stands behind the counter, perhaps prepping for a photo report scheduled for 8/19/2024.

After that, I entered Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, occasionally referred to as Batuu East.

Dok-Ondar is still on vacation from his Den of Antiquities, as his curtain remains pulled closed. I hope he comes back refreshed and ready for work.

Two white, bucket-shaped objects with handles, resembling helmets, are displayed on a shelf. The background appears to be a concrete wall. This PHOTO REPORT from a Hollywood Studio captures the intriguing scene on 8/19/2024.

I did see the hotel ice bucket Camtono Safe, at Dok’s, so you might be happy to hear it’s been restocked.

A person in a costume stands in front of a detailed spaceship replica at Hollywood Studio, with tall rock formations in the background, surrounded by other people in a theme park—an unforgettable moment captured for the 8/19/2024 photo report.

I spotted Rey out and socializing with the guests near Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

People explore a themed merchandise store with sci-fi decor, including stormtrooper helmets and various displays. Ceiling fans and industrial-style lights are visible. Stay tuned for our PHOTO REPORT from Hollywood Studio on 8/19/2024!

This is just my two cents, but First Order Cargo deserves better air conditioning. The fans aren’t doing the job… Florida is hotter than you think!

A garden with several large trees and shrubs, enclosed by black fabric fence panels. Through the foliage in the background, red and blue playground equipment reminiscent of a Hollywood studio set is visible.

In Toy Story Land, we’ve been looking for this extended seating area for over two years… and it’s STILL not open! I’m surprised! In my opinion, an indoor seating area would be a great addition to this land.

The image shows a building exterior at a Hollywood Studio with a blue and white facade, a dark blue column, and a cardboard machine labeled "Key to Happiness" on the left side. There is a door adorned with signs and a small group of people nearby, seemingly captured for an 8/19/2024 photo report.

I didn’t see anything going on in Animation Courtyard. The walls are here by the exit of the former Voyage of the Little Mermaid. The new show, “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure,” will start later this year.

People walking near a large blue building under a partly cloudy sky. Strollers are parked to the right, and a sign with a Mickey Mouse design stands beside them. PHOTO REPORT from 8/19/2024 captures this lively moment at Hollywood Studio.

I wish we could see Bluey and Bingo meet guests here after seeing them at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

A hand holding a blue water bottle decorated with various stickers, including one of a drink from Buc-ee's, in an outdoor setting. This PHOTO REPORT captures the essence of everyday adventures in the backyard or while waiting for your Hollywood Studio tour on 8/19/2024.

Today’s visit to Hollywood Studios was decent and provided a nice walk. It’s still hot out here, so please stay hydrated. We have a list of all the water bottle filler stations at Walt Disney World Resort if you need it!

Have a Magical Day, and see you next time!

Behind the Scenes of 2024 Haunted Mansion Holiday Gingerbread Display

Disney Parks Blog shared a behind-the-scenes look at this year’s gingerbread display in the Haunted Mansion Holiday.

2024 Haunted Mansion Holiday Gingerbread Display

A dimly lit room with a long table set for a meal, featuring various colorful figures and decorations, including a Christmas tree and elaborate chandelier. An eerie blue light streams through a window.

Each year, the Haunted Mansion Holiday features a new gingerbread display on the mansion’s ballroom table. Halloween Town’s mad scientist, Dr. Finkelstein, inspired this year’s Frankensteinian creation: a giant gingerbread zombie named Lil’ Franky. The zombie is on an operating table, with a series of claws trying on his different heads.

A collage of Christmas-themed mechanical robots adorned with colorful lights and decorations, featuring gears, candy cane arms, skull motifs, and festive designs.

The gingerbread creation was brought to life by the Disneyland Resort culinary teams, technology teams, Disneyland Live entertainment, and the Disneyland Bakery.

Workers in safety gear and uniforms assemble a large gingerbread-themed sculpture, detailing and securing various candy and biscuit-like elements.

Cast and crew spent over 240 hours creating this display. 150 hours were spent just building and programming the animation and lighting. The 5-foot-tall, 6-foot-wide display is made of the following:

  • 60 Pounds of Gingerbread
  • 50 Pounds of Powdered Sugar
  • 10 Pounds of Egg Whites
  • 30 Pounds of Rolled Fondant
  • 5 Pounds of Crystal Sugar
  • 10 Pounds of Chocolate
  • 2 Hidden Mickeys

Watch a timelapse video of crews building the gingerbread display on Disney Parks Blog. And watch our POV video of Haunted Mansion Holiday 2024 below.
