Stay in Star Command with a Buzz Lightyear-themed room at the Toy Story Hotel of Shanghai Disney Resort. The value resort first opened in 2016 but the Buzz-inspired rooms opened last year, along with new family suites.
Buzz Lightyear Room at Toy Story Hotel
This is the world’s first Toy Story-themed hotel. This Buzz Lightyear room theme is relatively new.
Starting with the closet, this part of the room sets the stage and makes you feel as though you’re sleeping in the queue of Alien Swirling Saucers (though this is enclosed and air-conditioned). The art style is identical.
On the interior closet wall, we have Buzz Lightyear’s spacesuit. This graphic somewhat reminds us of the Incredibles’ suits inside the closets at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. It makes more sense here as this is a “value” hotel. We think this is very cool.
Some of this art might be recycled, as we recognized the grabber tool on this side of the closet. We do love that every inch of the closet is covered in themed art, including the underside of the top shelf.
Along the left side of the closet wall is a storage area for the standard slippers for the Toy Story Hotel — which you do get to take home with you. You also get a reusable Toy Story Hotel bag to help keep your items safe on the journey back home.
The slippers all look the same, with one featuring Woody’s sheriff’s star badge and the other with the Star Command icon for Buzz Lightyear. These slippers do not say “Andy” on the bottom, like the slippers at the Toy Story Hotel at Tokyo Disney Resort.
Moving over to the bathroom, there is a great Buzz Lightyear tile around the large mirror at the sink.
The vanity itself is quite large. There is also a stepstool for any smaller guests to be able to reach the sink and the mirror.
A hair dryer is kept in one of the vanity drawers, and there’s plenty of space for storage.
Paper cups with the Toy Story Hotel logo are available on the counter should you need them. You can also take them home.
There are also two bottles of water in the bathroom, which are meant to be used for brushing your teeth and washing your face and hair.
Here, we have USB-C and USB outlets along with other plugs. A two-prong plug will also work here without an adapter.
This shower curtain is adorable and features sketch art of Little Green Aliens rocketing through the air with jetpacks and actual rockets.
The shower’s tile is reminiscent of Pizza Planet, thanks to the red and white checker pattern. We wish that the shower curtain could have been more forward with the Pizza Planet theming, but we still like the one we got.
We really like that the shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel dispensers are sealed, and you can see that they have been cleaned. Baby shampoo and baby bath foam are also available.
A bath mat is rolled away and tucked into a corner of the tub, so you don’t slip when showering or bathing. Otherwise, this is your standard shower and tub setup.
Going back to the sleeping area, we think this is adorable and love it. It’s over the top for sure, but we think that this is perfect for a value resort, as they are meant for families with kids — or those who are kids at heart.
This height measurement graphic on the wall next to the closet is of course in the metric system, but still a cute photo op for the room.
We love the faux space window on the wall opposite the beds. It makes us think of the windows in the rooms of the former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.
This dresser unit includes a three-dimensional red valve on one cabinet door on the far left, and while it doesn’t spin, the cabinet does open to reveal a standard mini-fridge.
On top of the mini-fridge cabinet is an espresso machine, a coffee maker, and a black box full of coffee pods and creamer. Bottles of water are also lined along the wall. A set of outlets is behind the water bottles.
The dresser itself contains a folder with information about the resort, and a drawer with tea supplies. How many Disney hotels still in the world have a mug for the hotel? This is one of those things that’s become impossible to find worldwide, and is what we expected.
The bottom of the top right drawer is themed and looks as though Buzz Lightyear has dropped all of his supplies inside.
A dehumidifier is sat against this far left wall next to the bed; this is quite common to see in the Asia Disney hotels. Next to it is a themed wall with another porthole “window,” depicting a Star Command spaceship preparing to dock. The climate control panel is also located on this wall.
There’s other fun decor throughout the sleeping area like Little Green Alien throw pillows, a Rubik’s Cube bedside table,
The front panel of this bedside table is actually a cabinet door, and opens to reveal a safe.
Another offering that isn’t quite as common at the domestic parks is hotel-themed pens and a notepad.
There is also a hotel room phone and alarm clock.
There are plenty of outlets here as well, including two plugs and USB-A and USB-C plugs on the left, and two more outlets with two USB-A ports on the right. The light switches are also located here.
Overlooking the entire bedroom area, you can get a greater view of the mural along the back wall, depicting Buzz Lightyear laser blasting an asteroid above a rocky red planet.
To the left of the leftmost bed is a set of double windows, which we like. It gives the room a feeling of size, though the room is not small. There is also some Star Command theming above the curtains.
A small table in front of the leftmost bed appears to be made out of a Sorry! game piece, with a wooden chair on either side.
Two more outlets can be found on the wall here, with USB-A and USB-C ports as well. Above the outlet, though, is a highlight for us — a thing in the room you can play with.
Along the wall here is a massive, working slider puzzle. You can see the completed image via a sticker on the bottom right corner, which is a Little Green Alien flying through space with a jetpack.
Here is our welcome packet for the room, which includes an Amenities Bag, a park map, and cute room keys.
A “Hi Summer” box of notecards and window clings of “Toy Story” character innertubes was also left for us on this table.
The lighting fixture above the table is themed, too, which we enjoy.
You get a few things to take home when staying in this room; sadly, you can’t take home the Little Green Alien pillows. The first of these items is a Little Green Alien towel.
Another of these items is a Star Command logo luggage tag.
The back of the tag has lines for you to write your information down.
Next is a double-sided pillowcase. One side is navy blue and features Buzz Lightyear rocketing into action.
The other side is yellow and has Buzz’s silhouette above the Toy Story Hotel logo.
The room also includes three pairs of slippers, with one of them for kids. All three pairs are navy blue and feature the same design: a Little Green Alien whooshing through space on a jet pack, with the opposite shoe reading “Ooooohh.”
We weren’t expecting so many take-home items, as at Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disney Resort, extras are normally an add-on to the room that you purchase when booking. We’re not sure, but it could be possible these items are also for sale in the hotel.
We’re quite surprised with just how much there is to take home from this hotel room — they’ve almost outdone Tokyo Disney Resort in this regard.
Final Thoughts
Overall, we’re pretty impressed with the room and think it’s a lot of fun. If you’re a “Toy Story” fan, this is a no-brainer stay. That being said, if you’re not going to spend a lot of time in the room, we don’t think the upsell is worth it unless the theme really means something to you.
You do get early entry access to Shanghai Disneyland if you stay at either of the hotels, which is a great benefit. However, if you’re planning to spend a day in the park open to close, it may not be the best decision for you. It’s quite a price jump from the regular room.
There is also a Woody-themed room, but we didn’t have time to check it out. Maybe next time!
