Walt Disney World has confirmed that permits are being filed this week to begin work on the “Cars” and Disney Villains-themed areas coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom.
Walt Disney World Filing Permits This Week for Frontierland Expansion
In a press release, Walt Disney World confirmed that the Frontierland expansion in Magic Kingdom “officially begins” with permits being filed this week to start construction.
On August 10, 2024, at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro unveiled new details for never-before-seen Walt Disney World additions ranging from fantastical to wicked during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase.
The historic expansion of Magic Kingdom officially begins as permits are filed this week to start moving ground.
Walt Disney World filed other permits related to Frontierland earlier this year. It’s also possible Big Thunder Mountain could close for an extended refurbishment once work begins.
Announced during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase panel at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the Frontierland expansion will include a new “Cars” area and a land dedicated to Disney Villains. Together, these two new areas will be the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history. The latter will be found “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain.“
On August 12, Disney confirmed that Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will eventually close to make way for the “Cars”-themed expansion. We previously reported this closure as a rumor, which included the permanent closure of Liberty Square Riverboat. New concept art of the “Cars” area was also released.
Disney has said that guests will have “plenty of time” to say goodbye to Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America before construction on the Frontierland expansion begins next year.
