Every Disney theme park across the globe has something special that stands out above all the other magic being made each day. If you ask a thousand people what is most special to them at Disneyland Resort, you may get a thousand unique answers. But we think that the characters are just plain better at Disneyland than Walt Disney World — and there’s one big reason why.
What Makes Disneyland So Special?
It could be a one-of-a-kind attraction, a delicious snack, or even a special event. But for me, as someone who most frequently visits Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, it’s the Streetmosphere at Disneyland.
Streetmosphere is a term used for performances and characters appearing in undedicated spots. It could be along Main Street U.S.A., in a gift shop, or outside attractions.
Walt Disney World, with its massive crowds of guests visiting from around the world, often cuts down on random character appearances and Streetmosphere, to prevent crowd congestion and unmanaged lines. Instead, characters are given dedicated Meet & Greet spots such as Princess Fairytale Hall in Magic Kingdom. These areas are designed with queues and wait times, exchanging random encounters for plannable experiences. (Which, to be fair, Disneyland does some of this too.)
While there is nothing wrong with structure and organization, there is something special about spotting a character just out and about, wandering the park.
Sometimes, you may exit Pirates of the Caribbean, only to find Captain Jack Sparrow himself sneaking around the Pieces of Eight gift shop, plotting his next heist with some young guests. Other times, you may spot Cinderella’s evil stepsisters riding King Arthur Carrousel.
Aside from characters, Disneyland also has a ton of other performances happening all day around the parks. The most iconic, of course, is The Dapper Dans; a barbershop quartet singing acapella Americana and Disney tunes in iconic colorful pinstripe suits and straw hats. Another fun one is the Jammin’ Chefs; a band that uses pots and pans as instruments!
The best part of these experiences is how random they can be. Many are unscheduled. When characters show up, they never do the same thing twice. The randomness ensures that every visit to Disneyland Resort is unique from the last!
