WDWNT visited the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Friday, August 7, for a special one-year-out celebration kicking off the countdown to the 2027 Department of Defense Warrior Games at Walt Disney World Resort.
2027 Warrior Games at Walt Disney World

The Warrior Games themselves will take place August 7-14, 2027. Friday’s event marked exactly one year until competition begins, marking the third time Walt Disney World will host the Games, following previous events at ESPN Wide World of Sports in 2022 and 2024. The 2026 Warrior Games were held in San Antonio, Texas, at the Henry B. González Convention Center.
During Friday’s presentation, Warrior Games representatives joined Disney leadership, partner organizations, and former competitors to preview next year’s event and discuss the role adaptive sports can play in the recovery of wounded, ill, and injured service members.
Nearly 200 wounded, ill, and injured U.S. service members are expected to participate in the 2027 Warrior Games. Competitors will represent the Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force/Space Force, and Special Operations Command.

The Games are designed as more than a typical athletic competition. The Warrior Games use adaptive sports to support recovery and rehabilitation while celebrating the resilience and dedication of service members. The program’s mission emphasizes healing, empowerment, and support for participating warriors and their families.
One of the biggest announcements during Friday’s presentation was the expansion of adaptive pickleball. After previously appearing as an exhibition event, pickleball will become an official competitive medal sport in 2027.

Organizers currently list 12 adaptive sports: archery, cycling, field, indoor rowing, pickleball, powerlifting, precision air sports, sitting volleyball, swimming, track, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby.

Attendees at Friday’s event were also invited to try adaptive pickleball themselves following the presentation.
‘Ignite’ the Fire Within

Organizers also unveiled the theme of the 2027 Warrior Games: “Ignite.”
The theme centers on recovery beginning with a figurative spark — a decision to overcome challenges, redefine one’s circumstances, and rebuild. Adaptive competition, camaraderie, and the military community then help turn that spark into a larger force for resilience and achievement.
Warrior Games Program Manager Letty Williams introduced the theme during Friday’s ceremony and discussed how the Games provide participants with opportunities to rediscover community and purpose through adaptive sports.

Adam Ball, Vice President of ESPN Wide World of Sports and Disney Water Parks, spoke on behalf of Walt Disney World during the event. Hall highlighted Disney’s pride in welcoming the Games back and the wider community that develops around the competitors, their families, coaches, and supporters.
ESPN Wide World of Sports regularly hosts major athletic events beyond Disney’s own competitions. Earlier this year, for example, Banana Ball made its Walt Disney World debut at the complex, continuing the venue’s role as a destination for large-scale sporting events.
A Community to be Found in Competition

One of the most personal portions of Friday’s ceremony came from Master Sergeant Mike Haley, a former Warrior Games competitor.
Haley discussed his recovery after suffering a back injury and the challenges of adjusting when his military path changed. He described finding a renewed sense of purpose through the Warrior Games and, just as importantly, discovering a community of fellow competitors with shared experiences.
Those ideas have been central to the Warrior Games since the annual competition was first held in 2010. The program provides wounded, ill, and injured service members with a national adaptive sports competition intended to support recovery, resilience, empowerment, and renewed purpose.
The Games were initially held in Colorado Springs from 2010 through 2014 before moving among military installations and host cities around the country. Orlando first joined that list when ESPN Wide World of Sports hosted in 2022, with the Games returning to the complex again in 2024.
The 2027 Warrior Games run August 7 through August 14, 2027, at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Games will be free and open to the public, with livestream coverage also planned.
