Imagineers have revealed that Piston Peak National Park structures were shortened to keep the sightlines of Magic Kingdom clear.

Balloon tests are used to visualize what they are seeing in sight and digital models. For Piston Peak, the large balloon (roughly the size of Lightning McQueen) was lifted up to the highest point of elevation. Imagineers then spread out around the park to look at the sightlines. This helps the Imagineers alter and finalize designs accordingly.

It’s important to Imagineers that Piston Peak fits into the overall park sightline so that it looks perfect from every angle in Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney Imagineering promised they were considering sightlines when it came to the Cars-themed area, ensuring car architecture would not be visible from Main Street, U.S.A., Liberty Square, or another area of the park.

The first balloon test took place over a year ago, but they realized some of the elevations were a little too high. So they went back and looked at their designs, made adjustments, and tested again. This time, they were “right on the money.”

They also completed a sight test with Villains Land to see how these two lands pair together. Some of Villains Land’s scales need to directly relate to Piston Peak’s scales, which also directly relate to other attractions like Big Thunder Mountain, Haunted Mansion, and beyond.
