In a D23 presentation on Sunday, Imagineers Michel Den Dulk and Tim Delaney shared that the 22-meter-long Columbiad Cannon will be restored when the original Space Mountain returns.

In a D23 presentation on Sunday, Imagineers Michel Den Dulk and Tim Delaney shared that the 22-meter-long Columbiad Cannon will be restored when the original Space Mountain returns.

The cannon has been left stationary since 2009 due to frequent breakdowns. After restoration, the cannon will launch riders from 0 to 44 mph in under two seconds.

The steampunk Columbiad Cannon is where Space Mountain riders are first launched into the coaster. In the lore of the original De la Terre à la Lune (From the Earth to the Moon) version of the attraction, the cannon was created by the Baltimore Gun Club to send moontrains to the moon.

In the current Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain version, the cannon is a hyperspace launch.

Late last year, Disneyland Paris released a limited edition Columbiad Cannon figure.

It was announced last night that Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain will be restored to its original Space Mountain, the acclaimed “From the Earth to the Moon” version (a.k.a. De la Terre à la Lune) from 1995.

The original version was themed after the famous Jules Verne science fiction novel, with a distinctive steampunk look.

Hyperspace Mountain will close at the end of 2027.
