Walt Disney Imagineers have announced Dark Avenue for Monstropolis in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We also got a glimpse of the work that is taking place behind construction walls.
Dark Avenue in Monstropolis
Dark Avenue is the main street that leads to the Monsters, Inc. factory, which will house the land’s featured suspended door coaster, on the far right in the photo above behind the facade of Harryhausen’s. Dark Avenue is where guests will get to enjoy several restaurants, shopping, and more.
Behind Construction Walls
Walt Disney Imagineering also showed off a lot of the thematic details that are being installed in the land, including pillars, teeth, and more.
Imagineers explained how real cities are born in different places, and they strived to create a sensible logic to Monstropolis by bringing parts of different eras of time to monster-fy the land.
They took details and scenes from the films and then put those into the context of how a city would be developed over time. The Imagineer also explains how they are not creating an animated structure or series of buildings, but rather creating spaces that are influenced by the animated movies.
Imagineering talked with Pixar to learn more about the buildings, including weight capacity and supports, because monsters are very heavy creatures.
However, there are monsters of all shapes and sizes, so Imagineers have worked to create different-sized doors.
We also got a look at the windows of Monstropolis, which are similar to human windows, but have Monster details like teeth, horns, and eyes. The added depth puts guests right into the story of Monstropolis right away.
Imagineers also shared they have realistic mock-ups of the structures to help ensure the details are not missed when the real structures are being created. They showed mock-ups of pillars, arches, and more.
In addition to the architecture, there is so much more to create a land—graphics, music, smells, and more.
Monstropolis will open in phases beginning next year, though no opening date has been announced.

Monstropolis has taken over the former Muppets Courtyard, along with a new coaster show building being added on as an expansion to the park in what was formerly a backstage Cast Member parking lot. The door coaster will be Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster and first vertical lift coaster.
The new show inside The Glob theater, which previously housed Muppet Vision 3-D, is officially called Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike, with an original song from prolific musician and composer Randy Newman.
