Disney’s planned live-action adaptation of Gargoyles has reportedly been turned to stone.

The series is no longer moving forward at Disney+, a source reportedly confirmed with Variety. The project had been in early development with the streaming service since 2023.

Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman previously claimed the project was no longer in production while speaking with ComicsOnline in an earlier August interview. In Weisman’s own words:

Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead. I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action.

Gary Dauberman, whose credits include It, Annabelle Comes Home, and The Nun, was set to write and executive produce the reboot. Dauberman would have also served as showrunner, while Wan was attached as an executive producer through Atomic Monster.

Dauberman said in 2025 that he hoped the adaptation would preserve the original cartoon’s darker, serialized, and operatic qualities. No casting announcements or expected release window were revealed before development ended.

The original Gargoyles animated series aired from 1994 through 1997, producing 78 episodes across three seasons. It followed Goliath and a clan of ancient Scottish gargoyles who awaken in modern-day Manhattan and become the city’s nighttime protectors. Its voice cast included Keith David, Salli Richardson, Ed Asner, and Jonathan Frakes.

All three seasons of the animated series remain available to stream on Disney+.
