More than four years after Kenobi premiered on Disney+, Ewan McGregor is publicly urging the company to bring him back.
Return of the Jedi Master Kenobi?
The actor renewed his campaign to reprise Obi-Wan Kenobi while speaking with E! News at the premiere of his new film, The End of Oak Street. McGregor said he remains ready to play the Jedi Master again, although Disney and Lucasfilm do not appear to share his sense of urgency.
“I’m ready whenever they are. They just seem to not be ready. I don’t know why, but I’m up for it.”
McGregor returned to the role in the six-episode Kenobi limited series, which premiered on Disney+ in 2022. The story took place 10 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, following a defeated Kenobi as he emerged from hiding to rescue a young Princess Leia and confront his former apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, now Darth Vader.
Although the series reunited McGregor with Hayden Christensen, it did not carry Obi-Wan’s story all the way to the events of the original Star Wars film.
The series concluded with Liam Neeson returning as the Force ghost of Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan’s former Jedi Master. McGregor wants to explore what happens after that reunion and before Kenobi meets Luke Skywalker again in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
McGregor believes that gap leaves room for several more stories, as he explains:
“At the end of the ‘Obi-Wan’ series, I’m walking off into the desert. I’ve realized I can’t keep the pressure on Luke. I realized he has to have his own childhood, so I leave him with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.”
“The next time we find Obi-Wan Kenobi, he’s Alec Guinness up in the mountains.”
“What happens between those two moments is what I want to do and spend the rest of my career doing these stories. Stories, you know, series or movies. We’ve got plenty of time; I’ve got 10 years before I am Alec Guinesses’ age. So come on, Disney!”
Despite McGregor’s enthusiasm, Disney and Lucasfilm have not announced a second season, film, or other live-action continuation featuring his version of Obi-Wan. His latest remarks also represent a less optimistic update than he offered in 2024, when he said Lucasfilm was “exploring” possibilities for a second season, despite mixed reception following the series’ first season.
