A high-quality pirated copy of Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached millions of users on X before it was removed.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Leaks Online
According to Variety, an account using the name Fredrick Bryan uploaded the entire film to X at 6:05 a.m. PT on Friday, July 31 — the same day it opened in theaters across the United States.
The unauthorized video remained available for approximately nine and a half hours. By the time it was removed, it had reached 5.9 million accounts, accumulated more than 143,000 likes, and been reposted approximately 10,000 times.
Additional accounts reportedly uploaded their own copies of the movie, although many of those posts were removed more quickly. Some clips were replaced by notices stating that the media had been disabled following a report from the copyright owner.
The leak also caused spoilers and individual scenes from the film to spread widely across social media. Some users circulated AI-enhanced screenshots captured from the bootleg, including images taken from scenes featuring Tom Holland.
Sony Pictures declined to comment on the incident. It is not currently known whether the studio will pursue further action against the person or people responsible for the leak.
X allows Premium subscribers to upload videos as long as four hours, making it possible to post full-length movies directly to the social media platform. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the second major theatrical release to leak on X in recent days. A copy of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey reportedly received 2.1 million views in approximately two and a half hours before it was removed and the responsible account was suspended.
The leak does not appear to have significantly diminished legitimate interest in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned a record $72 million from domestic preview screenings, surpassing the previous record set by Avengers: Endgame.
The film continues Peter Parker’s story after Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ended with the world forgetting his identity. Holland returns alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo, and Sadie Sink.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing exclusively in theaters.
