Users across Instagram and TikTok are criticizing viral Walt Disney World guests who are apparently abusing access to rentable scooters a.k.a. Electric Conveyance Vehicles (ECVs).
Scooter Abuse at Walt Disney World
The outrage is pointed at two groups of guests in particular. A 2024 video from TikTok user @paigejuliette has re-emerged, showing three women having a “Disney World Day Scooter Edition” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The caption seems to indicate the guests do not have disabilities necessitating the scooters: “Dont worry, disney has [enough] scooters to rent for everyone!”
The video is gaining traction again after @mainstreetkp made his own video on TikTok and Instagram calling out the women.
Many commenters are calling for the guests to be banned and for Disney to implement stricter rules for scooter use similar to Disability Access Service (DAS), although those updated guidelines have faced criticism from disabled guests and advocates. Some say Disney should require medical documentation, although this is not even required for DAS.
User @toni_plus5 has posted more recent videos of her “Scooter Crew,” a group of several women who rented scooters at EPCOT. @mainstreetkp also made a video about them and they are facing similar outrage, although they claim they aren’t misusing the scooters. In one of their viral videos, they are seen driving in circles on the World Showcase promenade, sometimes running into each other’s scooters.
Disabilities are not always visible and some people who require scooters or wheelchairs can also stand and walk for a limited time. But whether or not members of the Scooter Crew have such disabilities, playing bumper cars with the vehicles is dangerous for riders and guests walking nearby, plus could damage the scooters.
And despite @paigejuliette’s assertion that Disney has enough scooters for everyone, Disney does often sell out of scooters, particularly on busy days like holidays.
Daily ECV rental at Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs is $65. At theme parks, a refundable $20 deposit is required while a $100 deposit is required at water parks and Disney Springs.
