Disney fully revealed the limited edition Captain Redd doll, which will first be available at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event and then online from DisneyStore.com. We got a sneak peek at the doll and other parks-inspired collectibles last week.
Redd Doll from Pirates of the Caribbean
Only 3,000 of the doll will be sold worldwide, beginning with D23 August 14 – 16 and then online starting August 17 at 8 a.m. PST. The second doll in the series inspired directly by a Disney Parks character, this doll is based on the Redd Audio-Animatronic that debuted in Pirates of the Caribbean in 2018 as part of a refreshed auction scene.
“Our doll is based on the updated version, so we have her posed out as she is in the ride, commanding the auction,” explained designer J. Fuchs in a Disney Parks Blog interview. For Redd’s packaging, the team focused on details like the dimensional box for Redd to prop her foot on, the auction banner, and the chicken in the background.
When it comes to modeling dolls after animatronics rather than animated characters,” Fuchs said. “We might be able to pop over to WDI or the park and see the outfits in person, match swatches, check out all the little details, and often talk to the people working on them. It’s hard to beat that for reference!”
Fuchs added, “Working on the animated characters is tougher because you can’t always see what the details are, so we have to fill in the gaps in our information with historical reference and what works to give the closest effect to the movie.”
With Redd, they were able to blend elements from both the animatronic and the roaming Disneyland Park character.
Her layered pirate costume is made up of a satin bodice, embroidered elements, ruffled trim, puffed sleeves, studded skirt, flowing petticoat, and molded boots. Look for Easter eggs hidden in the embroidery like swords and skulls.
Her belt has accents like golden buckles and chains, with a duo of shiny pearled pistols and a gold key at the waist. The look is topped off with two necklaces, a choker, and a faux suede pirate hat with dramatic feathered flair. Her red hair is neatly styled with beads tucked into her braids.
