National Geographic 'LION' Documentary Series Details Shared at D23 2026

Details were shared at D23 this weekend about National Geographic’s newest documentary series, which will be available to stream soon.

Jon Favreau shared more information about the new documentary at D23 this weekend. Favreau, who previously directed The Lion King (2019) and Mufasa (2024) returns to executive produce LION, his first National Geographic documentary series. He is joined by executive producer Mike Gunton and composer Hans Zimmer.

The four-part documentary series follows the true story of a lion cub named Kio on his journey to become a king. Filmed over four years, Kio grows from a vulnerable cub to a powerful leader, facing loss, exile, and rivals along the way.

LION will be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu starting Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
