Crews have torn light strips out of the World Celebration Gardens pavement in EPCOT.

Pavement Light Removal

Half of the center courtyard was blocked off earlier this month. Now we can see that many of the light strips in the closed area have been removed, leaving trenches in the ground.

We don’t yet know if this removal is permanent and Disney will fill in the empty trenches or if they will try to replace the lighting.

World Celebration Gardens opened in December 2023 and problems with the in-ground lighting began immediately. Whole sections went dark or didn’t synchronize properly with the lighting on Spaceship Earth.

The plastic light covers warped and cracked, leading to areas being roped-off due to the tripping hazard. Disney tried to hold the covers down with random screws.

Despite multiple attempts to restore the lighting effect, problems have persisted.

The lights paid homage to the light-up pavement that was removed from Future World for its World Celebration transformation. But the old lights, pictured above, were achieved with different technology and did not have the same issues.
