Walt Disney Imagineering filed a permit for Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, which is set to go through a major reimagining soon.

Walt Disney Imagineering filed a permit for Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, which is set to go through a major reimagining soon.

The permit doesn’t seem to be for major construction, with a description that just says “Install signage.” However, it could mark the beginnings of the ride’s update.

Disney contracted Jon Richards Company, a frequent collaborator. The company has worked on themed elements at all four Walt Disney World theme parks, Disneyland, and Tokyo DisneySea. They installed set elements at Test Track 3.0 and the new Walt Disney Studios sign, plus are working on Monstropolis construction in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

As usual, the permit expires in one year.

The reimagined Spaceship Earth will celebrate human connection. Further details about changes to the ride’s scenes, narration, technology, and timeline were not announced.

The project does seem to be an evolution of the indefinitely delayed reimagining originally announced in 2019. Spaceship Earth would have closed for changes in May 2020 but plans changed due to COVID-19.

Earlier this week, guests saw a Spaceship Earth animatronic malfunctioning.
