Pixar films have been hitting home for many of us on the team for years now. Whether it was watching Monsters, Inc. or Toy Story as kids or young adults, or watching Inside Out or the most recent Toy Story 5 film, they hold a special place in our hearts. Now, there’s a new Pixar film on the way that we’ve been stoked about ever since it was first revealed. Gatto is about a black cat named Nero who lives in Italy and faces an existential crisis about whether he’s lived the right kind of life, and we just got an update on the film!

Pete Docter shared an extended clip of the new movie, including a new look at the unlikely duo from Gatto, Nero, and Saverio, his pigeon sidekick. The movie is currently anticipated to be released on March 5th, 2027. 

While on stage, Pete Docter joked that water is the mortal enemy of cats, and this movie takes place in Venice. “The jokes write themselves,” he said. Gatto stars Mark Ruffalo (most well-known for his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) as Nero and is directed by Enrico Casarosa, the director of Luca.

 

The film uses a blend of hand-painted 2D animation with modern CGI animation to bring the story to life, which follows a black cat named Nero in Italy who is facing an existential crisis when he thinks back on his life, but being indebted to a local feline mob boss is making life extra hard. He forms a friendship with a street artist, but then gets adopted against his will.
