We’ve always dreamed of eating bugs! Haven’t you? We saw The Lion King at a very formative age and just knew we had to try it out.

Luckily for us, Walt Disney World is the place where dreams come true, even if they’re a bit outside of the norm. If you’re looking to grab a creepy (and crawly) snack, Disney Springs can provide for a limited time!

Did you hear that choir of angels sing? We did, because bug ice cream is BACK at Salt and Straw! The popular ice cream spot is known for its unique flavors that might feel almost…scary. Think we’re joking? Not in the slightest, because they just revealed their limited-time Halloween Series, and yes, bugs are included.

This year’s collection includes 6 unique flavors. Including The Great Candycopia…

…Jack O’Lantern Pumpkin Bread…

…Witch’s Brew Fruit Punch Sherbet…

…Chocolate Graveyard Cookie Crumble…

… and Creepy Crawly Critters!

Several of these are returning from the 2025 series, but the one that always gets us in the door is the Creepy Crawly Critters! While the names might be similar, the ingredients aren’t! Previously, the Creepy Crawly Critters was made with matcha ice cream, a splash of fresh orange juice, and Don Bugito’s edible insects (coconut toffee candied mealworms and chocolate-covered crickets). This year, they’ve removed the orange juice and replaced the coconut toffee mealworms with toffee brittle mealworms! A subtle change, but still a change!

We have, of course, tried this ice cream in the past and we really enjoyed it, hence our excitement now. The ice cream base reminded us of a creamy matcha latte with a subtle vanilla sweetness. The bugs reminded us of a savory KitKat, but we would recommend not thinking too hard about it. The flavors were well balanced and worked well together. We wonder if this is how Simba felt the first time he tried bugs.

The other flavors are just as exciting, though! Chocolate Graveyard Cookie Crumble is made with a dairy-free black cocoa coconut cream, black cocoa cookies, and red-dyed vegan white chocolate frosting. The Witch’s Brew Fruit Punch Sherbet is made with fruit punch sherbet, orange candy flakes, and sour candy apple fondant. The Great Candycopia is created with a trick-or-treater’s bag of chocolate candies dumped into our salted butterscotch ice cream. Finally, the Jack o’ Lantern Pumpkin Bread is made with pumpkin bread hunks folded into pumpkin-spiced ice cream, streaked with cream cheese frosting.

 

These flavors are included in the October monthly series, so they won’t be around forever! If you want to try them out, don’t wait too long.
