Disney CFO Gives a Sneak Peek of What's to Come to Disney+ and Hulu

Hugh Johnston, Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company, gave a sneak peek of what we can expect from Disney+ and Hulu during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.

Developments to Disney+ and Hulu

During the conference, when discussing Disney+, Johnston stated, “we want to create, essentially, the best streaming service out there, in terms of product, in terms of consumer engagement, that is sort of the core proposition of Disney applause.”

A part of creating the best streaming service, Johnston explained that it would involve bringing all their services under the Disney+ umbrella to create an integrated ecosystem.

Under this integrated ecosystem, fans could easily interact with other Disney entities like parks and cruises, and see Disney+ become not just a platform for videos, but also for gaming, merchandise, and other experiences. We can expect to get a taste of what this will look like in the spring of 2027.

“So, the goal there is to increase the frequency of use of Disney Plus, because we know when people increase their frequency of use, they tend to turn less, retention is higher, and we get better outcomes,” Johnston said.

Disney has also made a lot of progress toward this ecosystem through the integration of Hulu into Disney+. By creating this one-fan, one-account experience, Johnston stated that they have seen an impact in terms of reduced turnover.

Another addition we are likely to see come to Disney+ is live TV and Hulu add-ons and bundles that will be further integrated into Disney+

One strategic pivot Johnston mentioned during the conference was the adoption of a free version of Disney+. This free version would include FAST channels and free ad-supported TV without diluting what consumers are accustomed to with Disney+. Offering FAST channels brings more inventory into the integrated ecosystem.

With all of these developments to Disney+, Johnston plans to increase the number of Disney+ consumers and ad inventory.
