Hugh Johnston, the Chief Financial Officer of Disney, spoke highly of the company’s recently announced TikTok partnership at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.
TikTok and Disney Partnership

Last month, Disney and TikTok announced a partnership that will allow fans to discover and create content using scenes from Disney movies and shows. TikTok will offer creators access to assets related to hundreds of Disney IPs, including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and FX. In turn, a collection of curated Disney-centric fan-created TikTok content will appear in the Disney+ app.
At launch, short-form videos from participating creators who opt in to the program will live on both TikTok and in Verts, the Disney+ vertical video content that launched earlier this year.
“We’re excited about the TikTok partnership for a variety of reasons,” Johnston said. He went on to explain that this partnership “introduces a different type of consumer into Disney+” as TikTok has a younger audience.
“One, they interact, as opposed to being a passive watcher. And by virtue of the TikTok relationship, being able to interact with our IP, that really engages the younger audience in a significant way,” he continued.
Johnston also spoke about the Creative Ambassador Program, which will enable best-in-class creators to unlock special rewards and provide them with increased visibility, access to exclusive events, and career development pathways. He explained that this program will build “close relationships” between Disney and creators.
Finally, Johnston said that creating vertical content will “allow consumers to discover other aspects of what we have on Disney+ on mobile.”
