Former Disney Channel star Debby Ryan has revealed that she suffered a “life-altering brain injury” a few years ago after multiple concussions and years of severe migraines.

Ryan shared the details during an appearance on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, as reported by Variety.

The Jessie and The Suite Life on Deck actress said she was “out of commission for like six months” and spent about six months in neurological rehab.

“I had a pretty crazy life-altering brain injury a few years ago,” Ryan said. She described “pre-incident Debby and post-incident Debby,” adding that a later treatment helped get her “back online but there are some things that just did not come back.”

Ryan said the injury followed “hellish” migraines and at least five concussions. “After the fifth concussion, the brain injury made things significantly worse.”

She also described ongoing sensory issues. “Quite often the world is really loud and too bright,” she said. “Quite often I can see better and think better with my eyes closed. The visual data I am taking in can be so distracting and so loud.”

Ryan said she feels fortunate to have a team around her “who sort of reminded me who I am and was and also held a lot of space for that to change, potentially permanently, and love me through that.”

Ryan broke out as Bailey Pickett on The Suite Life on Deck in 2008 alongside Dylan and Cole Sprouse. She then starred as Jessie Prescott on Jessie from 2011 to 2015. The series ran four seasons and 98 episodes, co-starring Peyton List and the late Cameron Boyce.
