After first being rumored last week and seemingly confirmed by a Disney executive, more layoffs are officially happening at the Walt Disney Company. The news was confirmed today by Deadline.

Disney Layoffs Now Happening

Rumors of the layoff first started when a memo created by Chief Legal and Global Affairs Officer Horacio Gutierrez was widely circulated. The memo seemed to imply that AI was taking over jobs. Gutierrez warned of “hard choices” about “staffing investments” and the division becoming “a much smaller organization.” He went on to describe a “transformation process” that includes “automating certain workflows by leveraging the latest technologies.”

According to Deadline, today’s cuts will impact a couple of hundred employees, primarily in areas such as tech and HR. This is a smaller number than the previous two rounds of layoffs earlier this year.

The company’s TV division, Disney Entertainment Television, is also expected to undergo a major restructuring under the new head, Debra OConnell. This team will not be affected by the layoff, as well as the motion picture studio.

When Josh D’Amaro succeeded Bob Iger as CEO, over 1,000 employees were laid off in April. Then, hundreds of Pixar, ESPN, and National Geographic employees were laid off in July. For context, Disney had 231,000 employees at the end of fiscal year 2025. 172,000 were based in the U.S. and 59,000 were based elsewhere. Due to the company’s theme parks business, 16% of employees are part-time and another 8% are seasonal.
