Meet Disney Princesses and classic characters in Off the Page!, part of The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
On the morning of our media preview, only Donald and Daisy were greeting guests. We will update this post with more pictures of characters later.
The experience officially opens on September 14.
Off the Page!
Off the Page! is near the back of The Magic of Disney Animation experience. Each meet and greet space is inspired by a different animation department:
- Mulan in Story
- Rapunzel in Layout
- Chip n’ Dale in Hand-Drawn Animation
- Donald and Daisy in CG Animation
- Goofy in Lighting
- Stitch in Effects
Off the Page! was announced last year and the full character lineup was revealed in February. Many of these characters have been appearing outside in Animation Courtyard for the past few months.
The waiting area for all the meet and greets has blue carpeting patterned with Mickey heads and swirls.
Guests can see a map of The Magic of Disney Animation in this space. This is the same map released a few months ago. It features dozens of Disney characters enjoying the experience’s theaters, playground, and galleries.
Outside the meet and greets is a display case of character maquettes.
Above the meet and greets are sketches of Disney characters illuminated in a rainbow of colors. TV screens above the queues show behind-the-scenes footage from the animation process.
Walls in the waiting area are decorated with concept art, storyboards, and more. The meet and greets are organized from left to right in the order of the animation process, beginning with Story.
Mulan in Story & Rapunzel in Layout
There’s one queue for Mulan and Rapunzel, as indicated by a digital animator’s desk. Because these displays are screens, it would be pretty easy to change characters in the future.
Concept art on the walls of this queue includes scenes from Sleeping Beauty and Aladdin.
The storyboard depicts the “Part of Your World” sequence from The Little Mermaid.
Around the corner is artwork from Once Upon a Studio, the short film that inspires all of The Magic of Disney Animation.
Mulan’s backdrop features a watercolor-style background painting and a sketch of Mushu with Cri-kee. These look like they’re pinned to a giant cork board.
More large sketches are outside the meet and greet and there’s a cabinet of office supplies surrounded by photos of animators with storyboards.
Continuing through the queue, there is concept art for Strange World. Black and white photos show animators using the multiplane camera. A cabinet has office supplies inside.
This leads guests into the Rapunzel meet and greet space inspired by the multiplane camera. There are multiple layers to the forest background, creating dimension just like the camera.
On the wall is a mural of the multiplane camera.
Chip ‘n’ Dale in Hand-Drawn Animation & Donald and Daisy in CG Animation
Guests meet Chip ‘n’ Dale and Donald and Daisy in the hand-drawn and CG animation departments.
Chip ‘n’ Dale meet at a giant animation desk with a mug full of art supplies, books, and a sticky note referencing J.A. — James Algar, the director of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice in Fantasia. A sketch of a magic broom sequence from the film is on the desk.
A CG version of that sequence is then behind Donald and Daisy in the CG Animation set. Next to them is a large stylus.
A giant keyboard and mouse are nearby, in front of more books and sticky notes.
Goofy in Lighting & Stitch in Effects
The last pair of meet and greets is Goofy in Lighting and Stitch in Effects.
On the queue walls are images from films like Frozen and Encanto showcasing lighting and effects.
Goofy meets in front of an image of the Roy E. Disney Animation Building with mood lighting.
Stitch meets in front of a beachy scene. It’s on a screen and elements of the scene move periodically.
