Los Angeles residents and visitors caught a rare sight on Monday evening. To celebrate the opening of Fast and Furious: Hollywood Drift, Universal Studios Hollywood had the “Hollywood” sign illuminated with projections inspired by the coaster.

Hollywood Sign Lit Up for Fast and Furious: Hollywood Drift

The Hollywood sign has not been regularly lit up at night since the 1930s due to the cost of maintenance, but every once in a while, it’s illuminated for a special occasion.

Travel agent Em (@em.astrid.adventure on Instagram) shared video of the signs projections featuring coaster trains flying by and the letters of “Universal.”

Fast and Furious: Hollywood Drift finally opened at Universal Studios Hollywood on September 16. The ride began technical rehearsals in late July. An official opening was delayed while Universal added more sound barriers.

Noise levels have been a concern since before construction began on the roller coaster. Universal conducted sound tests in early 2023. They later announced the ride would have sound reduction technology.

Sound testing met requirements for the park but, after the ride opened for rehearsals, nearby Toluca Lake residents complained of hearing riders screaming.

The coaster reaches 72 mph across 4,100 feet of track, featuring spinning vehicles inspired by cars from the Fast & Furious franchise.
