A live-action Mary Poppins TV series is in the works, according to Deadline, and it will be a more faithful adaptation of the original P.L. Travers novels.

The series is being developed and produced by Tom Winchester for Pure Fiction Television, his indie studio backed by See-Saw Films (Slow Horses, Heartstopper) and U.K. talent agency Hamilton Hodell.
Winchester is developing the series on behalf of the trustees of the P.L. Travers estate. From a rights perspective, Disney does not necessarily need to be on board, but there are early talks to involve the studio given their association with the series.
Winchester is approaching showrunners but nothing is yet set in stone.
Though Julie Andrews’ “practically perfect” version of Mary Poppins from Disney’s 1964 film is the most famous depiction, the character in the books is stricter and more vain. There are eight books total, offering a plethora of adaptation opportunities.
Travers criticized Disney’s film. Her relationship with Walt Disney and the company was explored in Saving Mr. Banks (2013) starring Emma Thompson as the author and Tom Hanks as Disney. Disney released a Mary Poppins sequel, Mary Poppins Returns, in 2018 with Emily Blunt in the titular role.
