Aerial photos from bioreconstruct reveal that theming is being installed throughout Monstropolis as construction progresses at Walt Disney World.
Monstropolis Taking Shape

Muppets Courtyard continues to undergo its monstrous transformation into the Monsters, Inc. land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Aerial photographer bioreconstruct took a look at the current progress of Monstropolis.

The biggest new additions are wooden forms throughout, most of which will become planters. The building with arched details will house Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza (formerly PizzeRizzo).

This helpfully numbered shot notes the location of concrete forms for a garden wall (1), the exterior chopsticks theming for Harryhausen’s restaurant (2), and trusses to brace scaffolding (3).

The Monstropolis entrance plaza is receiving more theming on concrete columns framing the guest entry point.

This octagonal frame will form the foundation of an eventual fountain in the middle of the plaza.

The structure with blue tarps on the left is the beginning of Harryhausen’s. The scaffolding is in place to install theming on the facades.

In the lower right, carpenters are building more forms for concrete planters.

This area will transition from Monstropolis city streets to the factory as guests walk along the same commute as Mike and Sulley.

A final aerial shot provides some perspective on Monstropolis’ size and placement in comparison to the under-construction coaster show building above and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to the right. The large gray building at top right is the Rise of the Resistance show building.
Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Monstropolis is currently being constructed on the site of the former Muppets Courtyard and will open in phases beginning next year, though no opening date has been announced. Mama Melrose’s will become Harryhausen’s, a restaurant visited by characters in the first Monsters, Inc. Read more about the land’s shopping and dining venues.

Additionally, a new coaster show building is being added in what was formerly a backstage Cast Member parking lot. The door coaster will be Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster and first vertical lift coaster.

The new show inside The Glob theater, which previously housed Muppet Vision 3-D, is officially called Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike, with an original song from prolific musician and composer Randy Newman.

With the opening of The Magic of Disney Animation on September 14, a new Disney’s Hollywood Studios map also debuted. On the map, “Future Home of Monstropolis” is now over the former Muppets Courtyard off Grand Avenue. The new land is set to open in phases beginning next year.
