Little ones can play at a new indoor playground inspired by Mary Blair’s Alice in Wonderland artwork as part of The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The experience officially opens on September 14.
Drawn to Wonderland
The playground is in the back left of The Magic of Disney Animation, taking over a former office space.
Drawn to Wonderland comes to life through bold colors, whimsical shapes, and Blair’s unmistakable artistic style.
Some of her pieces are on display at the front of the playground, representing the Visual Development department of an animation studio. The contents of one painting are spilling out to create the playground.
Safety information is posted at the front. Children must be supervised at all times. The play area is intended for kids ages 6 months to 5 years old.
It’s split into two sides, one designed for ages 6 months to 23 months and one designed for ages 2 to 5 years.
Mostly based on the Tulgey Wood forest, the playground features fake trees with arrow signs pointing “this way” and “that way.”
Designed to make guests feel like they’re within a collage of artwork, there are flat and 3D elements. A statue of the Cheshire Cat is perched on a wood archway above a roller slide.
Various ceiling and lighting effects look like treetops and pink swirls or dark and stormy thunderclouds. One of Disney’s goals is to encourage various kinds of play, so they have sensory marbles embedded in the Tulgey Wood forest walls.
Guests can choose to paint roses red or white with a spinning play feature.
There are some padded benches with built-in outlets for adults to rest.
Guests can play inside the Mad Hatter’s house, overlooking the tea party scene. There are fake stone pathways and floewrs on the ground.
The house has steps to climb and holes in fake shrubbery to look through.
On the tea table are various interactive features, including spinning teacups and marbles. The center tea pot hides the Dormouse.
In the area for younger children, dandelions overlook an interactive feature. The caterpillar is on the back wall and butterflies soar overhead.
More giant flowers frame a small bridge. The singing flowers are on the walls.
