It’s not every day you get to meet a boy band LEGEND while previewing a new restaurant, but that just happened, and seriously, will y’all just pinch us already?
So we had the opportunity to attend a media preview of Fat Ones Hot Dogs and Italian Ice, a brand new restaurant opening soon at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk. The restaurant is owned by NSYNC’s Joey Fatone and his manager Joe Mulvihill. We got to eat some hot dogs and Italian Ice, and we got to meet Joey and Joe IN THE FLESH. We’re still not recovering, so we’re going to bring you along with us.
Fat One’s Hot Dogs and Italian Ice is a quick-service chain that will officially open at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk on September 19th. The menu includes signature hot dogs, loaded pop fries, Italian ice, and draft beer. The restaurant replaces the former Hot Dog Hall of Fame location, which closed on July 19th.
We attended a media preview where we got to see Joey and Joe, who took questions and talked about the new restaurant. We also got to try out a few of the hot dogs and some of the Italian ice flavors on the menu. But first, we had to ask what their favorite item on the menu was. Joey said it was The Angelo, while Joe said his favorite was The Cubano.
Here’s a quick look at the food menu:
And here’s a look at the Italian ice and beverages menu
Okay, now we have to talk about the food. We got to try Joey’s favorite (which is also now our fave), The Angelo ($10.49), a hot dog with tzatziki, tomatoes, red onion, olive tapenade, feta, and fresh dill on a brioche bun. Joey described it as a Mediterranean take on a hot dog, and he’s SO right. It’s fresh and light, but still loaded with flavor. The tzatziki adds a tanginess, while the veggies add a nice crunch. The dill brings in some brightness, while the feta and olive tapenade are more subtle and blend in with the other flavors. This is a hot dog that could pretty much please anyone.
We also had a chance to try The Fat One ($15.99), which is a footlong hot dog piled with roasted pork, pepperoni, chili beans, cheddar cheese sauce, red onion sauce, and fries on a soft bun. It’s a lot, and it’s messy, and we really hope you’re hungry if you order this. The meat flavors are most of what you get in each bite, along with a hint of flavor from the beans and the mild, creamy cheese sauce. The fries add a crispy potato flavor to each bite. This is for those of you who love loaded hot dogs.
We were also served samples of four Italian Ice flavors! We think these are just sample sizes and not full sizes, though, so keep that in mind. A small Italian Ice is $5.79, while a large is $6.79. You can also get an Italian Ice with alcohol for $13.79.
The Tropical Twist has a very similar flavor to POG juice, so you know we loved it. It’s refreshing with a sweet passion fruit flavor and a hint of citrus. We loved that it wasn’t SUPER sweet, though.
The Cherry tasted very artificial to us, but it’s still refreshing. This is probably one kids will really love.
The Cotton Candy really surprised us because it was such a complex flavor. It tasted just like cotton candy with sweetness, but we also got some fruitiness with each bite. It wasn’t sugary sweet, though.
The Lemon was both tart and sweet, and pretty much doubles as a frozen lemonade. This is the one you’ll crave when it’s hot and humid in Florida, for sure! One thing that also impressed us is how well these stayed frozen!
We enjoyed a chance to try Fat Ones Hot Dogs and Italian Ice early, but we’ll be back to try some other things on the menu when the restaurant opens on September 19th, so stay tuned to DFB for more reviews.
