The Japan Pavilion at EPCOT is now serving a rich and creamy Hokkaido Soft Serve that may be one of our new favorite treats for a hot day at the park.
Hokkaido Soft Serve — $4.99

This Japanese-style soft serve has an exceptionally smooth and creamy consistency, accompanied by a strong vanilla flavor. Despite its richness, it tastes and feels much lighter than typical ice cream, making it particularly refreshing in the Florida heat.
The soft serve also holds its shape surprisingly well instead of beginning to melt immediately. It comes prepackaged in a cone placed inside a plastic cup, so guests can carry it around the park without getting melted ice cream all over their hands. That makes it an especially convenient option for families whose children want ice cream without the inevitable sticky fingers.

Best of all, the cone is filled with soft serve all the way to the bottom. There is no disappointing hollow section waiting beneath the swirl—a beautiful thing, indeed.
Our only complaint lies with the waffle cone hiding inside the cup. The cone is not at all crunchy-yet-airy as you would expect from your typical waffle cone.

Instead, it comes out very chewy, almost rubbery in both taste and appearance. Maybe this is a consequence of the whole thing coming prepackaged and frozen; maybe our particular cone had been sitting in the freezer for some time; or maybe the chewiness is by design. In any case, it wasn’t for us, so that’s the one downside to an otherwise exceptional example of vanilla soft serve (and in our book, the ice cream is the main attraction).
Cone aside, we think the Hokkaido Soft Serve is absolutely worth stopping by Mitsukoshi to try on your next visit to EPCOT. Between its bold vanilla flavor, silky texture, generous serving, and grab-and-go presentation, it is nearly the perfect summertime park treat.
