Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman sent a congratulatory memo to employees (via Deadline):
Dear Colleagues,
There are milestones. And then there are moments that make history.
Last night, somewhere in the broad expanse of North America, some lucky soul purchased a ticket to Spider-Man: Brand New Day that made it the highest grossing film in the history of our country. This is a monumental achievement on the part of everyone who works in all parts of SPE, as we are also the third-highest grossing film of all time worldwide.
I want to express my gratitude to Ravi and everyone in Tokyo for their consistent support of the film company, to Destin, Amy, Kevin, Rachel and all of the terrific filmmakers and cast, especially our long-time partner, the fabulously talented Tom Holland. And to all of you!
The movie business will knock you around. So please take a beat today and savor the feeling. Number one of all time. Pretty darn cool.
Thank you all,
Tom
Brand New Day was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh, and Tramell Tillman.
