The Disney+ Change We’ve Been Dreading Is Finally Here

The Disney+ Change We’ve Been Dreading Is Finally Here

We’ve got some pretty wild news for Disney+ subscribers.

If you’re a subscriber, you likely know that there are different tiers to the plan — you can pay a lower price to see your favorite shows and movies but experience ads every now and then, or you can pay a higher price to avoid ads. However, things are about to change pretty drastically — no matter what type of tier you’re paying for, you’ll be seeing ads.

According to yahoo! news, those who purposefully spend more on a Disney+ plan without ads will now be seeing ads regardless, with certain exceptions. The new terms of use Disney just sent out to its subscribers state that the company is now allowed to include ads and sponsorships in subscriptions that were previously advertised as ad-free. This means that the last fully ad-free experiences are disappearing.

Up until now, seeing ads was part of Disney+’s “Standard with Ads” plan, but now, after the change, users of the “Standard” and “Premium” packages can also see such ads. Yes, this means that there is NO Disney+ plan that is now completely ad-free. However, those with the Standard package are expected to see ads more than those with the Premium plan, including while watching movies and TV shows. Disney has said that commercials can appear before or after playback, and trailers or notices about the company’s products and services are also possible. Currently, the terms and services have been updated for UK users, with changes to the US terms of service expected soon.

Ads can also now be shown during live content, special events, and reruns, but it’s unclear what Disney means by “special events.” It is confirmed, though, that these ads cannot be fast-forwarded through, and it’s unclear how long individual ad blocks will be and how frequently they will appear. There is one exception — children’s profiles in junior mode will remain ad-free.

In the coming days, users must accept these terms to continue using Disney+. Disney hasn’t revealed what consequences will be if the terms aren’t accepted, or if a paid subscription can continue to be used without agreeing to the new terms.
