With the release of Toy Story 5 on Disney+ last week, Disney is highlighting the Pixar franchise’s economic impact.
30 Years of Toy Story

The groundbreaking first Toy Story film was released in 1995. Since then, there have been four direct sequels, the spin-off film Lightyear, several short films, merchandise, and theme park rides based on the movie.
The films have earned over $4 billion at the global box office. Toy Story 5 alone generated $1.147 billion.

Disney shared that a study by independent research firm Steward Redqueen released ahead of Toy Story 5 found that the franchise has generated more than $50 billion in total economic impact worldwide. $4 out of every $5 of that impact lands in the broader economy, powering jobs and value across retail, transportation, tourism, manufacturing, and utilities.
Domestically, Toy Story has driven $25 billion in economic impact across all 50 states. California, Florida, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada are the states where the franchise supports the largest share of the state’s GDP.
Before Toy Story 5 hit theaters in June, fans had streamed more than 2 billion hours of Toy Story content on Disney+, making it the service’s most-watched film franchise. In anticipation of Toy Story 5, the first four films drove over 60 million hours on Disney+ — the largest lift ever seen for an upcoming theatrical release.
At Disney Parks, Toy Story characters are featured at four fully immersive lands, 23 attractions, and two hotels, plus experiences across entertainment, dining, character meet and greets, and Disney Cruise Line.

The franchise is growing with its viewers. Millennials who saw Toy Story in theaters in 1995 are now bringing their Gen Alpha kids to the theaters. Millennials continue to drive the greatest impact through engagement, followed by Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
Disney said in their press release, “The study underscores that Toy Story is more than a franchise. It’s a story of innovation, investment, and impact — one that extends beyond the screen to families and communities.”
