Capt. Williams joined the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator in 1943, serving in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. On Nov. 18, 1952, during the Korean War, seven Soviet MiG-15 fighter jets appeared when he was flying from the USS Oriskany, leading to what became the longest dogfight in U.S. military history. Over his career, he flew more than 220 combat missions and received the Medal of Honor, Silver Star and Navy Cross for his valor, devotion to duty and extraordinary aviation service.

Recently, Capt. Williams, his close friends, and fellow retired military aviators were invited to Disneyland Resort, where Williams was named an Honorary Citizen of Disneyland. The honor was given by Disneyland Ambassador Michele Mary in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Being named an official Citizen of Disneyland was especially meaningful for Capt. Williams, as he shared that Walt Disney was his hero during World War II for the efforts put forth in his animation and artwork supporting the troops.

Later that afternoon, a special Flag Retreat ceremony honoring Royce was hosted. Disneyland cast members, the Disneyland Band, and the Dapper Dans helped recognize Royce’s service and legacy.

“This year has been very special for Royce; he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in February, and today Disney is honoring him during the Flag Retreat Ceremony,” said retired U.S. Navy Capt. Paul Tanaka, a friend of Royce Williams. “Disney has shown their profound respect and commitment towards honoring service members, and I’m grateful they have chosen to honor Royce today. I know this is a special moment he will forever cherish.”

After the Flag Retreat, Royce was treated to a flight on Soarin’ Across America at Disney California Adventure. Royce found the experience to be a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the legacy of American aviation with a touch of Disney magic.
