The acclaimed director shared the piece on his personal Instagram account. The artwork depicts a tribe of Na’vi, Jake and Neytiri among them, surrounding and placing their hands on Tony Stark in his Iron Man armor.

The text overlaid on the image reads:

“You are one of the people”

Congratulations to Marvel and the #1 Avengers: Endgame: Encore for bringing moviegoers to the cinemas!

– Jim Cameron

The quote comes from a scene in Avatar: Fire and Ash in which human Miles Socorro is officially welcomed as a Na’vi in a ritual performed by Ronal and Eytukan.

Avatar held the worldwide box office record for approximately a decade before Avengers: Endgame surpassed it during its original 2019 theatrical run. Avatar returned to the top of the all-time chart following another theatrical release in 2021, but Endgame has now overtaken it again following its own extended re-release as Avengers: Endgame: Encore.

Avengers: Endgame officially reclaimed its title as the highest-grossing film in box office history in early October 2026, following its “Encore” theatrical re-release.

According to Variety, the 2019 Marvel Studios film has now grossed a historic $2.925 billion worldwide, placing it above James Cameron’s Avatar, which has earned $2.923 billion globally after five theatrical re-releases.

Both films are owned by Disney. Avatar was originally released by 20th Century Fox, which Disney acquired in 2019. Disney is responsible for seven of the 10 highest-grossing films of all time, including Avatar: The Way of Water at $2.33 billion, Titanic at $2.26 billion, and Avengers: Infinity War at $2.05 billion.
