2026 runDisney Wine & Dine 5K participants hoping to snap a photo with the Aristocats kittens were greeted with two unwelcome surprises: incredibly long character lines and race-ending “balloon ladies,” who have not previously been present at runDisney 5Ks.

The 2026 Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend was the first runDisney event of the season to have extra 5K runner slots. The incredibly popular Aristocats theme of the race all but guaranteed those extra 5K spots would fill up. Reportedly, Disney added up to 10,000 more runners on top of the race’s regular 14,000; we heard final numbers ranging between 21,000 and 24,000 runners total.

To accommodate the extra runners, the 5K race started 30 minutes earlier, at 4:30 a.m., and start times continued until 7:30 a.m., with three total corrals. A WDWNT reader who participated in the race in the first corral shared that lots of people who were originally assigned to the first corral decided to move to the last, so corral three was especially busy; when they finished the 5K around 5 a.m., they said they observed hundreds of cars still lined up to get in for the 7:30 a.m. corral.

As a result, the characters at the start and end of the race — especially the Aristocats kittens, who were at the start of the race and were the main draw — quickly accumulated hour-long waits.

Normally, this is not an issue for the runDisney 5Ks, as in the past, they have not been timed races.

That is no longer the case: runners for the 2026 Wine & Dine 5K were greeted with three sets of “balloon ladies,” one for each corral.

Instagram user eartoearmagic expressed the collective surprise of the crowd, exclaiming in their video, “Folks, this is history in the making: this is our very first-ever runDisney 5K with balloon ladies.”

Named for the Mickey balloons tied to their backs, balloon ladies act like human pace cars and are responsible for “sweeping” runners who fall behind their set pace. Runners who get swept cannot rejoin the race; instead, they are removed and shuttled to the finish line. Racers who are swept do still receive a race medal, although they become ineligible for the challenge medal if that race was part of it.

Instagram user pixelsandpixies shared her experience after finishing the 5K, noting that Cast Members were telling participants that a 45-minute wait for the characters meant they were at risk of getting swept by the balloon ladies and encouraging people to leave the line if they wanted to finish the race.

She explains that in the past, this was never a fear for 5K participants due to the lack of balloon ladies, so runners weren’t at risk of being swept and could take their time to hit up all the character meet-and-greets along the race route.

However, despite not being part of a challenge, the Wine & Dine 5K was timed and thus assigned balloon ladies due to the increased capacity. Various participants have said the balloon ladies were keeping a 26-minute mile pace for this 5K, which, when combined with the hour-long character waits, essentially made meeting characters on the 5K route extremely difficult if you weren’t in the first corral.

So, this year’s Wine & Dine 5K runners had to weigh whether waiting in line for characters was worth getting swept. And now they know what to expect for future races: Disney has already confirmed that this will be the new procedure for runDisney 5Ks to manage the larger number of participants.
