In a new video shared by Disney, a costume designer breaks down the inspiration behind the icons shown on the Sanderson Sisters’ outfits worn in Hocus Pocus 2.

Disney Costume Designer Breaks Down Hocus Pocus 2 Outfits

Hocus Pocus 2 costume designer Salvador Pérez Jr. noted that one of his costumers was a practicing witch who introduced him to the Alphabet of the Magi, a Wiccan alphabet. That ended up being the jumping off point for the costume design for the Sanderson Sisters (Winifred, Mary, and Sarah).

As seen on Winifred’s dress, there is symbolism to the three goddesses, the three moons, and powerful women covens. That lore then got extended to the new witch characters introduced in Hocus Pocus 2.

Hocus Pocus

While the original 1993 Hocus Pocus was not an immediate success, it has become a Halloween cult classic in the decades since it was released. The Sanderson Sisters have gone on to star in their own stage show during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World, have Hocus Pocus-themed photo ops at Disneyland Resort’s Oogie Boogie Bash, and appear on seasonal merchandise during the Halloween season.

The sequel film, simply titled Hocus Pocus 2, premiered on September 30, 2022 — 29 years after the original — on Disney+. As noted by Deadline, the sequel set a Disney+ streaming record with 2.7 billion minutes of viewing in a week.

Hocus Pocus 3 was then greenlit by Disney back in June 2023. In October 2025, Hocus Pocus star Bette Midler confirmed that she’d seen a “brilliant” script for a third and final film, making it a trilogy. Hocus Pocus 3 is now officially in early development at Disney Live Action Studios.
