Disney Files NEW Patents That Could Change the Future of Ride Technology

Did you know that the Walt Disney Company has thousands of patents? They’re filing new patents all the time for new technologies, methods, builds, and anything else you can think of. Sometimes we see Disney’s patents and go, “Huh? How will that fit in the parks?” The Walt Disney Company has so many different parts, and they’re always discovering something new, even if it doesn’t end up being used for parks and movies.

Disney recently filed three new patents, and we’re breaking them down right here!

First up, we have a patent for modular omnidirectional floors for a reconfigurable video production environment. We know that sounds like … a lot, but it’s a way to move the floor in multiple directions for a video set.

In the drawing, you can see someone and an object standing on a piece of flooring that can move under you in any direction.

Disney shared previous technology like this, which gives you a good idea of what it will look like!

The next patent is for real-time motion-capture animation. It improves sensor-data capture and modification: it records the physical environment and generates a first data object; then it can request a modification to the first object based on a second data object, including motion-capture data. Again, that’s kinda complicated, but this graphic shows all the steps to get the animation.

This reminds me of when they used motion capture technology for Scooter at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets. I will always think Scooter wearing the motion-capture sensors is one of the funniest things. It’s why he looks so realistic in the ride!

The third patent Disney recently filed aims to secure digital registration of contracts governing the use of media content. This helps manage copyright licensing rules and restrictions, especially for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) model training.

Disney has spoken out about their intellectual property being used in other AI systems and how users shouldn’t be able to use images like Mickey Mouse for whatever graphics and content they want.

Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. filed a lawsuit against MiniMax, an artificial intelligence image and video generator, for copyright infringement in September 2025. There was a large concern about the AI system to generate unauthorized, infringing videos that are “substantionally longer, and even eventually the same duration as a movie or television program.” While Disney uses AI within the company, we’re not surprised that they’re working on ways to protect their copyright.
