Frontierland and Fantasyland Flood During Sudden Thunderstorm at Disneyland

A freak thunderstorm at Disneyland last night sent guests running for higher ground as clogged drains turned parts of the park into wading pools.

Flooding in Disneyland After Sudden Storm

A cloudy Friday night at Disneyland suddenly got very wet when the lowering sky, which had been ominously thundering with lightning bursts in the distance, opened up into a short but heavy rainstorm. Although it had rained earlier in the week, rain was not on the forecast for Friday, so guests and Cast Members alike were caught off-guard.

An Instagram video shared by user the.disneylanders showed that in Frontierland, clogged drains at low points meant the water rapidly accumulated into a wading pool that was ankle-deep in spots. The sudden rain prompted guests (who are not as accustomed to sudden wet weather as their Walt Disney World counterparts) to run for the covered walkways in front of the Pioneer Mercantile and Shooting Exposition, while others took to using benches and planter edges as stepping stones to head for drier land.

Cast Members waded through and worked quickly to clear the overwhelmed drainage system, as acknowledged in the original post’s caption:

🚨🌧️ BREAKING NEWS FROM DISNEYLAND: A brave Cast Member is unclogging the drain as we speak. 🫡💦

Godspeed, sir. 🫡 Our dry shoes, our socks, and the future of Frontierland are in your hands. 👟😭🤠

Not all heroes wear capes… some carry the fate of thousands of Disney adults on their shoulders. 🏰💪🌊

Meanwhile, Fantasyland wasn’t faring much better.

Another video from the.disneylanders shows the walkway between Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn resembling a river with water visibly flowing. A guest splashes through the ankle-deep water to get up onto a walkway. Their caption states that backed-up drains were also the reason for the Fantasyland floods.

In other parts of the park, canopies over guest seating areas could do little to contain the sudden storm surge, and overflowed into impromptu waterfalls, as shown in another guest’s video depicting the Haunted Mansion (with its Nightmare Before Christmas overlay) and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during the heavy rain:

The text overlaid on the video reads “Bro I came to Disneyland the wrong day it fr wasn’t supposed to rain today.” The caption further laments, “bro i didnt even have a hoodie or an umbrella, my feet were soaked n i was all wet bro.”

The thunderstorm only lasted around 15 minutes, but it was enough to thoroughly soak the park for the rest of the night, with multiple outdoor attractions closed as a result.
