Gertie the dinosaur at Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been repainted amid an ongoing refurbishment of Echo Lake.

Gertie Repainted

Gertie had clearly been freshly repainted when we paid her a visit on Wednesday. Her green exterior was shiny and consistent.

The new paint is most obvious at the base of the dinosaur, where no more water line is visible. Echo Lake was drained for refurbishment in August, and we have been expecting a repaint for Gertie.

For comparison, here are two photos taken at similar angles on September 28 and then October 14. Prior to the repaint, there were faded and worn areas on Gertie’s base and tail. Now they are the same color as the rest of her.

That said, it appears the entire dino was repainted, not just the base. She’s the same teal color as before, and any differences in our photos are due to lighting. The white snow on her head and back may have also been repainted.

Earlier this year, Gertie’s tail had to have surgery. Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction remains open and operational.

The structure is based on Gertie the Dinosaur, a 1914 animated short film by Winsor McCay. Gertie was the first animated dinosaur and one of the first animated characters ever.

Disney Jollywood Nights guests this year will get to shop a Gertie Loungefly bag.
