REVIEW: This Magic Kingdom Restaurant Just Got a Menu Overhaul…But Is It Still One of Our Favorites?!

When it comes to dining at Disney World, you’ve got a TON of options. Want something quick and easy? You’ve got it. Something middle of the road and comforting? Yep, that too. And if you’re looking for something upscale and luxurious, you can find that as well.

New eats from Columbia Harbour House

We recently stopped by Columbia Harbour House at Magic Kingdom to check out their newly revamped menu, and now we’re bringing you our FULL review. Is it worth a stop on your next trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth? Find out here!

A refreshed menu has landed at this iconic Magic Kingdom counter-service spot, so you know we had to check it out! When we went to order, only the dessert was listed on Mobile Order, so we had to order the old-fashioned way. We expect this will change soon, though!

Columbia Harbour House

To start, we grabbed the new Beer-Battered Fish Platter for $14.99. This beer-battered fried fish (we’re guessing cod) comes with steak fries. The fish is oddly shaped, to say the least, with curls and folds you won’t find on your standard fried fish — likely from the thin fillet reacting to the heat from frying. The exterior is also noticeably greasy. One touch left our phone, camera lens, and everything else we handled covered in oil!

Beer-battered Fish Platter

The batter is more structured than before, with a crisp, crunchy exterior. Inside, the fish is pretty chewy with a firm first bite. It lacks fresh, rich seafood flavor and isn’t as flavorful as the fish and chips at EPCOT, despite looking very similar. It doesn’t necessarily taste cooked from frozen, but the interior is very mild and never goes beyond a basic fish flavor.

Nicely battered

Compared to fresh fish and chips from a coastal restaurant, this falls short. Kids probably won’t notice a difference and may be happy to see a change from the usual chicken tenders! If you’re craving a familiar fried dish, this will do the job. If you’re hoping for fresh, rich seafood flavors, we’d skip it.

Flaky fish

The Hand-breaded Shrimp Platter is also new, and you can get it for $14.99 as well. This platter features hand-breaded, fried shrimp served with steak fries. The breading is thin enough to see the shrimp through it, giving the dish a lighter look than heavily battered options, and it wasn’t super greasy as a result.

Hand-breaded Shrimp Platter

The shrimp are slightly crispy outside and firm inside, with distinct shrimp flavor in every bite! They taste relatively fresh. The shrimp are on the smaller side, but they make up for it in quantity (we had about 8, plus lots of fries). Each one is satisfying and filling. A dipping sauce would be a great addition to bring out the flavors. The tartar sauce added a tangy, savory element, but squeezing it out of a packet took some extra effort.

Light breading

We can see shrimp lovers really enjoying this! If you’re used to very fresh shrimp and sauces for flavor, you might be a little let down. Still, it’s a breath of fresh air among all the other theme park food options!

Good with tartar sauce

We also picked up the Plant-Based Crab Cake Sandwich, which is $13.99. This plant-based sandwich stacks a thick crab cake, lettuce, tomato, and New England tartar sauce on a brioche bun, served with steak fries.

Plant-based Crab Cake Sandwich

It’s generously loaded, and all that height makes it a bit tricky to bite into. The flavor is much sweeter and tangier than we expected from a savory sandwich. Tomato is surprisingly the strongest flavor in every bite, despite only a couple of slices. The crab cake has a mild sweetness of its own.

The crab cake is thick and chewy with a dense texture. The creamy, tangy tartar sauce comes in second behind the tomato, and together they give the sandwich a tangy, slightly acidic kick. The lettuce is more stringy than crunchy, so it gets lost among the toppings with no noticeable flavor or texture.

This thing was huge!

The brioche bun is soft, slightly buttery, and sturdy enough to hold everything together! Between the heavy flavors and thick steak fries, this can be a lot for a long park day. The crab cake also doesn’t taste especially fresh or authentic, so if you’re expecting a next-level crab cake, this isn’t it. The good news is there’s plenty of food, and it’s easily shareable between two!

Cross section

The steak fries that come with each entree are generously sized with thick cuts! They seem to be cooked from frozen rather than made fresh in-house. They’re lightly salted on the outside with very little crispiness. The texture leans chewy and soft rather than crispy, lacking the golden crunch you expect from a steak fry. Still, it’s nice to have some fries between bites of fish to balance out the fishy flavors, even if they aren’t the freshest.

Steak fries were good

Finally, for dessert, we got the Boston Cream Pie for $5.99. In the past, this has been served trifle-style, but now it’s more of a traditional pastry. This dessert features layers of yellow cake and Boston cream custard filling, topped with chocolate ganache frosting and a sprinkling of yellow cake crumbs.

Boston Cream Pie

The overall flavor and texture reminded us of chocolate chip pancakes. The yellow cake is soft and fluffy, but slightly dense, and the custard adds moisture with a subtle sweetness. The chocolate ganache frosting is thick and gooey with a rich chocolate taste. It leans sweet, like milk chocolate, but isn’t very creamy.

Some good layering

The custard has a smooth, pudding-like consistency with a subtle vanilla flavor. It adds some sweetness, but mostly contributes texture and moisture rather than a strong flavor of its own. Overall, the yellow cake and chocolate ganache are the strongest flavors, with the custard bringing the layers together in a soft, creamy bite. This could be a treat the whole family enjoys! It’s much larger than we anticipated, so it’s shareable, though better suited to a couple of people than a big group.

We loved this!
