Taika Waititi confirmed that his Star Wars film has been put on ice while he works on other projects.
Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Put ‘on Ice’
Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film that he was set to direct and co-write has been in development since 2020. In 2022, it was confirmed by Waititi in an interview he gave to The Wrap that filming wasn’t going to happen in the near future, even though it was previously implied that Waititi’s film may hit theaters in 2023.
When asked about the status of his Star Wars film, Waititi said, “I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice, and we’re working on a different thing together.”
In a conversation with Variety, Waititi also said, “Well, there’s your answer,” in response to his publicist directing him not to say anymore about the project. “I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague. It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do. Ice ages do come to an end… Who knows?”
When Waititi does talk about his Star Wars project, he mentions “trying to go back and harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films, which is what I remember [from] them.”
He also discussed creating a storyline that was somewhat separate from the seriousness that takes place in other parts of the Star Wars world. “I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they’ve got so many things going on within that space. For me to do something there, it would need to be a little different and a little bit more its own thing.”
Currently, Waititi is promoting his latest film, Klara and the Sun. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, when discussing the status of the Star Wars project, said it’s “still somewhat alive.”
