Disney Research Hub shared a video and paper about Kamino, the simulation software they used to program the walking, talking Olaf animatronic and other Disney Parks robots.

Disney’s Kamino Software

Apparently named after the Star Wars planet dedicated to cloning, Kamino is a “GPU-accelerated physics solver designed for accurate simulation of complex mechanical systems with kinematic loops”, the paper states. Kamino was built on NVIDIA Warp and integrated into the open-source Newton physics framework.

The software simulates complex mechanical systems, such as multi-limb robots like Olaf, the Iron Man animatronic at Avengers Assemble Flight Force, and the BDX droids. Imagineers to develop and test the figures digitally. This is especially helpful when using large-scale reinforcement learning.

Disney Research says Kamino is ideal for when an application involves kinematic loops, accurate and robust dynamics, and GPU-accelerated batch simulation, but not for pure articulated systems and low-latency, single-system simulation.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang previously talked about Olaf and Kamino at the NVIDIA GTC conference.

The Olaf animatronic appears in A Celebration in Arendelle at World of Frozen in Disneyland Paris. It also sometimes roams among guests, but has fallen over sometimes.
