A guest is suing Universal Orlando Resort and Loews Hotels for negligence after she was injured while attempting to use a bathtub as a toilet because she could not access her hotel room’s toilet.
Guest Sues Universal Over Toilet Troubles

On October 10, 2024, Ann Banda was staying at Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort as a business invitee. The stay took place during Hurricane Milton, which affected resort operations.
The lawsuit states that the toilet in Banda’s room was in a separate enclosed area from the bathtub, not uncommon for hotel rooms. However, Banda could not open the door leading to the toilet because it was locked or stuck.
Unable to access the toilet and with limited ability to find a bathroom elsewhere due to hurricane-related closures, Banda tried to relieve herself in the bathtub.
While doing this, she “fell in and/or about” the bathtub, sustaining “serious bodily injuries.” Her losses due to these injuries are “permanent and continuing in nature,” according to the suit.
Banda is suing for $50,000 in damages, saying Universal and Loews should have ensured the toilet was accessible and usable before giving her the room.
We shared a tour of a Cabana Bay room back in 2020, but our bathroom had a step-in shower instead of a bathtub and the toilet was not in a separate, enclosed space.
