You GUYS, last night was Disney Night on Dancing With the Stars and I basically spent two hours with my jaw on the FLOOR.
Our team has been particularly obsessed with Dancing With the Stars this season as we’ve had a workwide bracket challenge organized by yours truly. I’ve personally been a fan of the show for years (I first watched as a teen way back in the age of Zendaya on the show — it would be my literal dream to see her husband Tom Holland do it now), but last night was my fave theme night each season, where they roll out the over-the-top costumes and set designs to celebrate something we here at DFB absolutely love…Disney! And I personally have a lot of thoughts about how the night shook out.
First of all, it’s important to note that this year’s theme was a dedication specifically to Disney on Broadway. Now, from the perspective of a fan, I was a little disappointed that a handful of the songs were not associated with Disney on Broadway shows — for example, Tangled and Peter Pan (which did have a Broadway show but it’s not associated with Disney or the song they performed). In addition, there were several songs performed that have been showcased multiple times on Disney night. It would’ve been nice to get some more representation from popular Disney on Broadway shows or from underrated Disney movie songs. But I suppose that there are some tunes that just choreograph better than others!
With that said, I’ve compiled my personal ranking of the dances of the night, starting with my lowest-ranked and ending with my best. Keep in mind that I’m not a professional dancer and I don’t have ballroom/latin experience. This is just speaking from the mind of a Dancing With the Stars fanatic and Disney Adult who had an absolute blast watching from the comfort of her couch.
11. “You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!” by Maura & Mark
Unfortunately, someone has to be at the bottom of the list, and for me last night, that was Maura and Mark. She started out the season with some seriously shocking dance showings, topping the leaderboard for a while, but now she’s dropping down toward the bottom. As I mentioned above, this wasn’t a song from a Broadway show, but it was a more unique pick, so I appreciate that aspect. Also, the moment in the cage at the beginning of the dance made me chuckle.
But dance-wise, this fell a little flat. Jive is a very athletic and high-energy dance, so it was an…interesting choice to do it on a week when she didn’t have as much chance to build the stamina for it, since they only had six days between shows and were trying to do a team dance as well. She struggled a bit to place her legs with the landings throughout the dance, and it gave it a bit of a disjointed feel at times. If you’ve been paying attention to dance styles throughout the season, Mark has mostly been sticking to dances that keep Maura “in hold” and they were even attached for a decent portion of this dance. (Yes, the pros DO have say in what dance style they perform — this has been confirmed in interviews and TikToks multiple times this season.) I look forward to seeing her dance more on her own in the coming weeks.
10. “Satisfied” by Julia & Ezra
Next up, we’ve got Julia and Ezra. The end of the night saw Julia going home in a somewhat-shocking elimination, considering she was topping the charts with social media growth and YouTube views for her dances. I loved that they went the full-on Broadway route with this song, and it was a tune that hadn’t been used on the show before.
The blend of Paso Doble and Revolutionary-era costumes and choreography was a lot of fun, but this dance lacked some of the attack I usually expect from Paso Doble. Her facial expressions and acting were on-point, but her feet didn’t quite stick into the ground with the power they needed. I’m sad to see her go, but I’m glad she got to do her nostalgic dances in the past few weeks first!
9. “Zoo” by Team Slaytopia
I had this dance ranked a little higher and ended up moving it around after I rewatched it. The first of the two team dances, “Zoo” from Zootopia 2 was admittedly a more disappointing song choice, considering High School Musical has so many fans and so much nostalgia. When I watched this dance at first, I really enjoyed it, but seeing it again AFTER seeing its competitor made me realize just how big of a difference there was between the two performances.
The stars overall didn’t seem to be having as much fun in this dance, and while the individual sections were well-performed and entertaining, the group dancing didn’t feel like, well…a group. When they were all dancing at the same time, it just felt like there were four couples out there doing the same moves instead of a team working together to put on a show. Everyone shone nicely with their own partners, but I think they could’ve played a bit more fun and quirky with the group choreography instead of sticking to so much traditional ballroom. The group dances are a time to be creative!
8. “I See the Light” by Connor & Rylee
It pains me to put Connor lower on this list after his spectacular performance on Horror Movie Night, but there were just some truly standout dances that ranked above him this week. The costumes and set for this dance were stunning, and the choreography that Rylee did was beautiful and elegant. Derek Hough compared it to a first dance at a wedding, and I have to agree.
But, as the judges said, Connor’s frame needs a bit of work to make it perfect. I’ve seen quite a bit of improvement in him since his earlier dances in frame, and that’s good news going forward. The unfortunate thing here is that after such a knock-it-out-of-the-park performance last week, I worry that going back into frame might’ve killed his momentum a bit (since he has struggled with his frame from the beginning). However, he was incredibly graceful and he’s really starting to look like a true dancer. I can visibly see how he’s getting more comfortable on the dance floor each week! Most improved across the season, indeed.
7. “A Star Is Born” by Amber & Pasha
The next three dances were really hard for me to rank because they were all absolutely incredible and challenging choreography-wise. I landed with Amber and Pasha’s Quickstep to “A Star Is Born” from Hercules in the number seven spot because I found it to be just slightly less memorable than some others. Now, it’s important to note that Quickstep is often touted as the most difficult of the five traditional ballroom dance styles, and like the Jive, it’s a very athletic dance.
One thing I can truly appreciate about Pasha’s choreography is that he will give you traditional elements every time, and his dances will be a true showcase of what that style is meant to be. There were a lot of steps and it was fast-paced, really demonstrating just how much stamina and precision Amber has. Plus, her leading him for part of the dance? Impressive! She rocked that. My main docking points were that there was a LOT of flexing…a lot. It felt like they flexed their biceps five or six times. And also, this song has been used a handful of times on the show already. Seems like a strange choice to keep getting used when it’s not a super popular tune (I can forgive those that are uber popular for being reused over and over).
6. “Easy as Life” by Tatyana & Jan
Like I said, this was a hard choice, but Tatyana and Jan landed in my number six ranking! They danced to “Easy as Life” from the Broadway show Aida and I was DELIGHTED by that choice. For Disney on Broadway Night, it was a great pull and brought some recognition to an underrated show. Plus, the dance was stunning, beautiful, moving…you NAME it.
Her lines were flawless and her body control was spectacular throughout the tricks. Every move was smooth and precise while also being graceful and lovely. They told a story through dance, and I could feel the raw emotion throughout the performance. They played the parts so well! My one wish is that they’d used a bit more of the floor. Sure, last week Connor and Rylee didn’t use much of the floor in their Contemporary, but because they were using a couch as a prop, it gave them a reason to dance in one spot. When the whole floor is open, it’s a bit more obvious.
5. “Under the Sea” by Ezra & Daniella
The dance that came out on top from that middle cluster was Ezra and Daniella’s Samba to “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid. Like Quickstep is often considered the most difficult ballroom style, Samba is usually considered one of the most difficult Latin dance styles (along with Rumba) because of all the technicality and the difficult hip movements and “bounce” that you need throughout the dance. Ezra managed to nail SO many of the technical elements of this dance.
The samba rolls with the challenge of their height difference and his prosthetic were particularly extraordinary, and that series of turns near the end were SO fast and had my jaw dropping wide open. I really love the way that Daniella incorporates his prosthetic into her choreography and showcases things he can do that other people can’t. This boy is definitely making it to the finals, you guys.
4. “Be Our Guest” by Jenna & Val
Now we make it into the two top individual dances of the night, and I went back and forth on which I would rank higher. Jenna Dewan and Val performed a Quickstep to “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, and it was a spectacle! They brought out the full set and the stunning costumes for this one, but they didn’t stray from incredible technique and challenging choreography.
Her leg and foot work is so phenomenal and if they were in another circumstance, it would be impossible to tell which of them was the pro and which was the celebrity. That split jump?! Are you KIDDING ME?! This was so deserving of a perfect score, and I didn’t even want to blink while watching it. My only docked point is that it seemed like the opening before dancing was just a smidge too long.
3. “Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious” by Harry & Jenna
And the star whose dance tops my list? Harry Shum Jr. with his Jazz to the iconic song from Mary Poppins with partner Jenna. WOW. Talk about looking like a pro and channeling the spirit of Dick van Dyke! That could’ve been a real Broadway performance, and he just danced his heart out.
Jazz is often criticized for being one of the “easier” styles to perform and Jenna did not make this easy for Harry. She gave some truly difficult dance moves and made it a high-energy number that he executed flawlessly. It was very athletic, from the knee turns to the toe touch that felt like he touched the sky. And can we talk about Jenna’s jump off the stage into the arms of the troupe? I gasped. I would watch this dance over and over again.
2. The Opening Number
You may be wondering…what ranks higher than Harry? Well, I wasn’t planning to include the non-competitive dances in this ranking but I simply couldn’t resist talking about the show-stopping opening number they did last night! It had songs from Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, The Greatest Showman, and The Lion King with some memorable vocal performances.
I love when Dancing With the Stars does big opening numbers, and this one will be one of my favorite for a while. It’s just so fun to see the pros show us exactly why they’re PROS.
1. “We’re All in This Together” by Team Wildcats
But far and away the top dance of the night, not for its technical prowess or its ballroom content, but for its pure joy, is Team Wildcats’ performance of “We’re All in This Together” from High School Musical. From the moment I saw which stars and pros were on this team, I knew the dance would be amazing, but I couldn’t have anticipated how fun it would be to watch. You could really tell how much they enjoyed being a team!
The individual sections were really great, considering you had some of the season’s strongest dancers showing off their talents, but the group dancing is what really made this so much better than the other team dance to me. The stars still rocked it without their pros by their side, and they actually looked like they were having a great time. There was energy and excitement and it felt electric. I’m predicting now that this is going to be the most-watched dance on YouTube this week!
So there you have it, all the dances from Disney Night ranked! Tell me in the comments if you agree or disagree. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.
